Meet Harvey! 🖤

A couple of weeks ago we went on an adventure to Queensland to pick up this handsome little man, and now it's time to introduce him!

Harvey will be 7 in September and is a sweet, playful boy who loves attention and being involved in whatever you're doing.

He's had a health check and vaccination at Melbourne Cat Vets new Richmond clinic and is doing well. Before he starts looking for a forever home, he'd benefit from a dental so we are going to get this organised for him as soon as we can. We are also going to take him for a heart scan as a precaution.

Harvey has previously lived with other animals, so now that his quarantine period is over we're slowly introducing him to some potential friends at Sphynx Rescue HQ. So far, he's settling in well🤞🏻

We'll keep you updated on his journey and hope he'll be available for adoption soon!

As many of you know, this has been our busiest year yet. Not only have we taken in more cats than ever before, but many have arrived with complex medical needs requiring extensive veterinary care. This has created a backlog of non-urgent procedures, including dentals, that we're working hard to get through.

If you're in a position to help, every contribution makes a difference to the cats in our care. Donations over $2 are tax deductible, and with tax time just around the corner, now is a wonderful time to support rescue cats like Harvey ❤️

Thank you to everyone who helps us give these beautiful cats a second chance 🐾

💔 Egypt 💔

Today we said goodbye to Egypt.

When Egypt came into our care, we discovered she had several medical issues. She underwent surgery for a painful corneal sequestrum and recovered beautifully, and we were making plans to investigate and treat what we believed was a potential nasal polyp affecting her breathing when we discovered that Egypt was in the advanced stages of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM).

We knew her prognosis wasn't good, but we hoped we would have more time.

Unfortunately, over the last week, her condition deteriorated rapidly. An emergency veterinary assessment confirmed that she had gone into congestive heart failure and had fluid on her lungs, which, in addition to the breathing difficulties she already had due to her blocked nose, meant she was really struggling to get enough oxygen. We were advised that the kindest thing we could do was let her go peacefully before she suffered any further.

She was only 6 years old.

We are devastated. We wanted so badly to help her, address her medical issues, and give her the happy, comfortable future she deserved.

Thank you to everyone who followed her journey and supported her care.

Sleep peacefully, sweet girl. Your final chapter was filled with warmth, cuddles and love, and you will be missed beyond words. 🌈🐾❤️

Introducing Jimmy!

This lovely boy came into care recently and has made himself right at home on our laps. He is nearly 6 years old and a big smoocher with the loudest purrs!

Jimmy has had a health check and vaccination and is booked in for a heart scan next month (just as a precaution - he didn't show any signs of heart issues). He did have a slightly sensitive tummy and was a bit underweight but with some probiotics and a change in diet he is already doing better.

Jimmy should be listed as available soon ❤️

Meet Ziggy! This gorgeous calico lady recently came into care and has already made herself right at home 🩷 Full of playful kitten energy, it’s hard to believe she’s nearly 7 years old! Taking photos of her was nearly impossible because every time the camera came out, Ziggy decided those hands were much better used for pats and would demand our attention instead 😂

Ziggy has now had her health check and vaccination and is doing really well, with no health concerns. We would still love to organise a heart scan for her before she begins the search for her forever home - purely as a precaution, she is showing no signs of heart disease at this stage.

Before coming into care, Ziggy lived with other cats and was actually part of a bonded pair. Sadly, after losing her best friend, she struggled to feel comfortable around the other cats in the home again 😢 Despite her family trying everything they could, she never fully settled back into multi-cat life.

Because of this, when the time comes, Ziggy will be looking for a loving home where she can be the centre of attention as a spoilt only pet and treated like the queen she is!

Introducing Stanley Tucci!

Stanley is a very sweet 9 year old boy that has come into our care recently. He loves attention and cuddles with humans.

Unfortunately he is spending his time in quarantine as he currently has an active tritrichomonas infection and is being treated. This isn't his first rodeo and he has received treatment before, but tritrichomonas is a very stubborn parasite!

Cats may shed small amounts of the parasite for the rest of their lives, or sometimes the infection can cause damage to the intestines which will lead to intermittent diarrhoea/IBD symptoms even if the parasite is resolved, though these can be aided by special diets and probiotics.

Even though it is very difficult, our goal is to treat him and fully eradicate the tritrichomonas if at all possible 🤞🏻🤞🏻 (though there are no guarantees!). Treatment involves following strict hygiene protocols and medication (possibly multiple rounds of it) then PCR testing (also multiple over a period of time) after treatment to make sure the parasite is gone and doesn't reoccur.

Each bottle of specially compounded medication is $120 and each faecal PCR test costs $400 😭 but we hope to do what we can to get him to clinical remission if it is at all possible - please send all the good vibes you can Stanley's way! We are also giving him lots of probiotics and supplements.

Stanley would benefit from a Melbourne based foster carer with no other cats (tritrichomonas is highly infectious) that can help him through his treatment - if this could be you please reach out!

If you are able to contribute to Stanley's care & ongoing treatment, every little bit makes a difference (and donations over $2 are tax deductible!) ❤️

Introducing Freya! 💗

This beautiful little Bambino lady is the last (but certainly not least!) of the four cats who came into care together earlier this year.

Freya is 6 years old and loves spending her days curled up in cosy beds or perched on top of the cat tower supervising everyone around her. While she tolerates other cats, she would much prefer to be the queen of her castle and would absolutely thrive as an only pet.

She has already had her general health check and vaccination, but before she is ready to find her forever home we would love to organise a dental procedure and heart scan for her. Hopefully we can get these booked in soon, we just need to do a little fundraising first as we currently have so many medical procedures to organise for the cats in our care.

If you are able to contribute in any way, whether through donations, purchasing merch, or ordering items from our Amazon wishlist - every little bit helps so much and allows us to continue providing the care our rescue cats need.

We are a little behind on introductions as things have been incredibly busy lately, but we have another five new faces we can’t wait to introduce to you all very soon! We will also update when Freya completes her vet work and is available for adoption. Thanks as always for all of your support! 💖

Apologies for this very long update post, but today has been a pretty tough day at Sphynx HQ.

This morning Pickles & Peggy Ham-Cat had appointments with the dermatologist. Unfortunately we still don’t have answers about what is happening with their skin. There is definitely something abnormal going on, but it doesn’t appear to be an infection and there is no obvious cause - which means there is no simple fix either. A lot of the recommendations we were given were things we have already tested, but we do have a few more things to try before the next step of taking skin biopsies (though we would like to avoid this if we can especially for Pickles).

Afterwards, Peggy, Gizmo, Ryder, Winrey and Egypt all had heart scans with veterinary cardiologist Dr Richard Woolley.

We are happy to share that Winrey and Peggy received the all clear.

Sadly, Ryder’s scan showed suspicious changes compared to his previous scan in 2020 (though it is too soon for a definite diagnosis). Ryder will need another scan in about a year to confirm, and if he does have HCM as we suspect he will need regular scans for the rest of his life and eventually medication to help.

Gizmo has been diagnosed with HCM which was completely unexpected for us. He is very much in need of a dental, which will now likely require the added cost of a specialist anaesthetist. He will also need regular heart scans and medication to help as the disease progresses.

Egypt appears to have quite advanced HCM. The disease has progressed to the point where the strain on her heart is causing the heart muscle to become thin. For now, Egypt is still doing well and enjoying life, but sadly her prognosis is not great. Due to the severity of her condition, it is not recommended that she undergo any procedures - so it looks like her nasal scope will not be happening and she will remain a snuffly girl forever.

If the perfect palliative home/foster home comes along where she can enjoy full run of the house and be completely spoilt for her remaining time that would be her ideal outcome. Otherwise, we will continue loving her for however long we are lucky enough to have her with us ❤️

IBS baddies stick together!

Gizmo & Winrey are our sensitive-tummy duo, currently on special diets (mostly Ziwi Peak).

We’ve been trialling a range of other foods to see if we can expand their diets - Winrey has handled most like a champ, while Gizmo… not so much 😅 But luckily no big allergic skin flare-ups so far (which used to be an issue before he came to us).

They’re not exactly social butterflies with other animals, but with a slow introduction they’ve agreed to tolerate each other… mainly for extra couch time with the humans 🛋️

Gizmo will need a dental before he’s ready for adoption.
Winrey is already available, but she’s a big personality looking for a home that truly understands her needs 💖

Not the update we had hoped to share, but sweet snuffly girl Egypt went to Melbourne Cat Vets Richmond clinic today for a nasal scope procedure to investigate her constant nasal congestion.

Unfortunately the procedure was not able to be completed as her pre-anaesthetic echo (heart check) showed some abnormalities in her heart which looked like dilated cardiomyopathy.

Egypt has been prescribed a few medications to try and help her heart and reduce the risk of possible complications, with plans for another heart check in about a month.

We have tentatively rebooked her nasal scope for June with the assistance of a specialist anaesthetist 🤞🏻

Egypt has also been prescribed a course of a different, stronger antibiotic in the meantime to see if that clears up her sniffles just to cover all bases.. it would be amazing if her nose miraculously cleared up and we didn't have to do the scope after all!
