Statement from the Tasman RSLA President

We understand that many in our community are disappointed by the closure of Diggers Kitchen.

However, we need to clarify that the Tasman RSLA has had no involvement in the decision made by the Committee of the Ex-Servicemen’s and Women’s Club to close Diggers Kitchen. The Tasman RSLA is not incorporated with the Club, and this decision was made independently of our Sub-Branch.

For transparency, the original statement from the Ex-Servicemen’s and Women’s Club is shared below:

Community Update – Tasman Ex-Services Club

The Tasman Ex-Services Club has had to make the very difficult decision to bring our current arrangement with Diggers Kitchen to an end. As of Thursday 18 December, Diggers Kitchen has ceased operating meals at the Club. The Committee would like to thank Brett, Ray & Staff for the last 3 years.

This decision was not taken lightly. The Committee made every effort to negotiate a viable outcome that would allow both parties to continue. Unfortunately, the Club has been covering the costs associated with running the kitchen while receiving no income from kitchen profits to offset these expenses. Despite ongoing discussions and attempts to reach a compromise that would at least contribute to the significant costs the Club incurs each year, an agreement could not be reached.

Continuing under the existing arrangement was simply not sustainable and would have placed the long-term future of the Club at risk. The Committee has a responsibility to protect the Club so it can continue to serve its members, locals, and veterans well into the future.

Looking ahead, we are excited to share that the Club plans to reopen for meals in the early New Year with:
• a new menu
• lower prices
• and a fully committed 10% discount on all meals for card-carrying members

The Tasman Ex-Services Club remains committed to rebuilding and strengthening our operations, and continuing to be a welcoming place for our community and those who have served.

We kindly ask our community to rally around the Club during this transition, as we will always do our very best to support you in return.

Thank you for your understanding and ongoing support. ❤️

Christmas Day Buffet and Boxing Day Schnitzel & Pint night will still be going ahead as planned.

Today two of our members, Amethyst and Peta Armstrong, were each awarded the National Emergency Medal with Bushfire Clasp in recognition of their service during Operation Bushfire Assist 19–20.

Although the Operation formally ran from 31 December 2019 to 26 March 2020, both Amethyst and Peta were already embedded within the Air Operations Centre at RAAF Base Richmond from September 2019, contributing to the early management of the emerging bushfire threat.

In their roles, they provided emergency relief coordination for national and international firefighting teams, supported airfield operations for firefighting aircraft, and assisted in establishing a vital staging and coordination hub between the Australian Defence Force and government agencies.

Their commitment and professionalism exemplify the spirit of service recognised by the National Emergency Medal.
Congratulations, Amethyst and Peta, on this well-deserved honour.
