A second case of bird flu has been detected in the Shoalhaven with Council advised that the H5 bird flu has been detected in an Australian tern at Dolphin Point.

As a precaution, biosecurity signs are being installed near the site. The area remains open, but please keep dogs on a lead, supervise children and avoid contact with sick or dead birds.

Council is working closely with The NSW Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD) who is leading the response to any detection of H5 bird flu in NSW.

If you find sick or dead wild birds, domestic birds, marine mammals or other wildlife showing signs of H5 bird flu:

🐦 **CONFIRMED H5 BIRD FLU DETECTION – CALLALA BAY**

A confirmed case of H5 bird flu has been detected in a Greater Crested Tern at Callala Bay.

We are sharing the official notification below so our local poultry keepers and bird owners are aware of this detection.

While this detection is in a wild bird, it is a timely reminder for everyone who keeps poultry and other birds, whether this be backyard or exhibition or commercial chickens, ducks, quail or other birds to take a moment to review the biosecurity measures you currently have in place. 🐔

🔎 Now is a good time to ask yourself:

• Are your birds protected from contact with wild birds?
• Is their feed and water protected from wild bird contamination?
• Are housing, equipment and footwear regularly cleaned and disinfected?
• Do you have procedures in place for introducing new birds?
• Are you avoiding unnecessary contact between your birds and other poultry?
• Do you know what to do if your birds become sick or die unexpectedly?

Good biosecurity starts with the everyday practices we have in place before there is a problem.

There is no need to panic, but there is every reason to be alert, informed and proactive.

⚠️ If you find a sick or dead wild bird, do not touch or move it. Keep yourself and your birds away and contact the relevant authorities for advice and reporting.

H5 Bird flu has today been confirmed in a bird found in Windang and the Shoalhaven Estuary is one of the sites identified for preparedness. Please monitor your flock and report any dead birds to the relative authorities.

The NSW Government has confirmed a case of H5 bird flu in the Illawarra for the first time.

It says a greater crested tern found near Windang tested positive after being reported to the Emergency Animal Disease Hotline and sampled by its H5 response program.

It's the 14th H5 bird flu event recorded in New South Wales, with the government saying there are no signs of mass wildlife deaths.

Five Islands off Wollongong and the Shoalhaven Estuary are among 34 sites identified for H5 preparedness because of the vulnerable wildlife they support.

The detection comes as authorities await H5 test results from a juvenile New Zealand fur seal found dead at Coniston Beach earlier this week.
