Today, we commemorate Malaya and Borneo Veterans’ Day. We acknowledge all who served during the Malayan Emergency, Thai-Malay Border operations, and the Indonesian Confrontation.

Called up for National Service in 1965, Private Michael O'Dea was sent to Borneo as a reinforcement for the 4th Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment (4RAR).

'I was assigned as a rifleman to 8 Section, 6 Platoon, B Company, which was at the forward company base [at] Stass, protecting the Stass Kampong [village] 2000 metres from the border with Indonesia. My section did patrols along the Gunong Raya [mountain] and around Stass base to the border of Indonesia.'

O'Dea served alongside Australian, British, New Zealand and other Commonwealth forces, including Gurkhas, in the Indonesian Confrontation.

Today, we honour all Australians who served during the Malayan Emergency, Thai-Malay Border operations, and the Indonesian Confrontation.

We pause to remember the 63 Australians who died in service of our nation during these conflicts.

We will remember them.

Lest We Forget.

RSL NSW has secured $1.8 million in Australian Government funding over the next three years to strengthen free advocacy services for veterans and their families across New South Wales.

Through the Australian Government Department of Veterans' Affairs' Building Excellence in Support and Training (BEST) Grants Program, this funding will support RSL NSW’s Advocacy Support Program, helping ensure veterans can access trusted, professional assistance at no cost.

Across NSW, 75 ATDP-accredited advocates provide fee-free rehabilitation and compensation, and wellbeing advocacy. They assist veterans and their families to understand entitlements, navigate DVA claims processes, pursue successful claim determinations, and connect with the right services and support.

RSL NSW President Vince Williams said, “Veterans navigating the rehabilitation and compensation system should be able to access high-quality advocacy regardless of their financial circumstances or where they live.”

“This significant investment will support RSL NSW in strengthening and expanding our network of veteran advocates across the state.”

The $5000 Allied Health cap administered by DVA

DON'T panic!!

* Not budgeted to start until 1 July 2027.

* Until the start date, DVA is conducting a consultative period prior to issuing guidelines for the new allied health funding process.

* The $5000 is a ceiling figure after which Allied Health providers submit clinical information-based request for further funding.

* Any complex medical situation will continue to be funded.

* The new system is intended to reduce the administrative burden on health providers.

Attached the DVA website explaining these points along with other details.

Please view any information from other sources in light of the DVA information provided here or on the DVA web site.

The Government will be investing $169.7 million to increase fees for allied health providers from 1 July 2027
