From South Australia to the Top End 🌎

Members from the SA State Emergency Service were recently deployed alongside SES units from across the country to support flood-affected communities in the Northern Territory. After arriving at Palmerston Regional Headquarters, teams moved into Katherine where conditions were challenging, with floodwaters initially reaching 18.5 metres at the bridge crossing before rapidly receding.

Crews worked closely with NT Emergency Service
and partner agencies including Northern Territory Police Force, undertaking tree clearance, rapid damage assessments, and supporting remote and regional communities. Operations extended across key locations including Adelaide River, Nitmiluk (Katherine Gorge), Edith Falls, Werebun, Barnjan and surrounding areas, with access often impacted by flooded roads and infrastructure.

This formed part of a broader multi-agency response, with additional support from AUSMAT and other local services and organisations assisting the Katherine community and surrounding areas.

Huge congratulations to our very own Kerry Marshall from Eastern Suburbs SES on receiving the Emergency Services Medal in the Australia Day 2026 Honours List.

An incredibly well-deserved recognition of Kerry’s outstanding service, leadership and dedication to our unit, our volunteers and the wider community.

Thank you for everything you do Kerry 👏🧡

Congratulations to Kerry Marshall of Eastern Suburbs State Emergency Service on receiving the Emergency Services Medal (ESM) in the Australia Day 2026 Honours List.

Kerry was recognised for his outstanding service, exceptional leadership and unwavering dedication to the SA State Emergency Service. Since joining the Eastern Suburbs SES Unit in May 2018, Kerry has responded to an extraordinary 1,344 operational callouts, making him the top responder in his unit and among the top five responders statewide.
His operational commitment is matched by strong leadership. After progressing through roles including Unit Business Coordinator and Deputy Unit Manager, Kerry was appointed Unit Manager in 2022, where he continues to lead one of the state’s busiest units with professionalism, positivity and integrity.

Widely regarded as a transformational leader, Kerry has strengthened unit performance and culture through mentoring, strategic planning and a strong focus on team development. A passionate advocate for learning, he holds qualifications across Urban Search & Rescue, Swiftwater Rescue, Base Camp Operations and Incident Management, and has served in key leadership roles during major emergencies, including the River Murray Flood Event (Foxtrot22) and the SA Inland Rivers Flood Event (Hotel25).

Kerry also makes a significant contribution at the strategic level through the SES State Executive Advisory Group and District Leadership Group, where he advocates strongly for volunteers and improvements to training, assets, infrastructure and member welfare. His service extends nationally, with deployments including the Kangaroo Island Bushfires, WA Tropical Cyclone Seroja and NSW Floods.

Kerry is a trusted and respected leader whose dedication, leadership and service have made a lasting impact on the SES and the communities it serves.

With the warmer months here in Adelaide, it’s great to see people getting outdoors and back into the activities they love, including enjoying our local mountain bike trails in the hills. 🚲⛰️

Recently, our crews responded to a serious mountain bike incident at Waterfall Gully that required a complex technical rescue to safely assist and extricate an individual from steep terrain.

A timely reminder to plan ahead, ride within your limits, and consider trail and weather conditions before heading out.

A few snaps from our recent Mass Casualty Response training exercise. These scenarios take a huge amount of coordination behind the scenes from IMT roles and safety oversight to planning, comms and all the moving parts that make a successful response work.

Huge effort from our friends in orange from SA SES - Dog Operations Unit, SASES State Operations Support Unit, Campbelltown State Emergency Service and Enfield State Emergency Service Units 🧡 and our friends in green at SA Ambulance Service 💚 for helping create a realistic multi-agency scenario.

A great opportunity to train together, sharpen interoperability and practise coordinated response under pressure.

Another year, another burn over training successfully completed as we prepare for the warmer months. 🔥🚒

Big thanks to Burnside CFS for having us. Training like this keeps our members ready for the rare but serious event of being caught in a burn over.
