On Sunday, the Society was pleased to recognise Ruth Styles' countless years of service, commitment, and dedication to the organ and church music in Western Australia. Ruth is one of the organists of St Michael's Anglican Church in Mount Pleasant, and has devoted her life to supporting and encouraging young organists and church musicians throughout the state.

Ruth's endeavours have been honoured by a significant donation to OSWA's Young Organists Development Fund, made by an anonymous donor in recognition of her many years of service.

Pictured L-R are Ian Fairnie (organist of St Michael's), Ruth Styles, Boyd Peters (OSWA President), Don Cook (OSWA Vice-President), and the Very Rev Dr John Shepherd (Patron of OSWA).

Juilliard-trained organist and Freo local Alessandro Pittorino will headline a special recital at St Patrick’s Basilica next month, marking 150 years since the first pipe organt arrived in Western Australia.

Presented by the Organ Society of WA, The Genius of Franz Liszt is set for 2.30pm on Sunday November 9, and will be performed on the Basilica’s 6,000-pipe church organ— the largest of its kind in the southern hemisphere.

OSWA president Boyd Peters says the anniversary is as much about the next 150 years as the past.
“What the Organ Society is looking at doing now is really very future-focused.

“We want to help support the current generations of organists, but also the up-and-coming generations, to keep playing these instruments as we look forward into the future.”

Mr Peters hopes the program will help reframe the organ, to encourage students and families to experience the instrument in a concert setting.

“They’re not only just for churches”, he said.

“We want people to be thinking that the organ is actually a very colourful instrument, a very symphonic instrument in sounds that it can create, and how it can actually move people through its production of music.”
