Congratulations to Monte alumna Mary Lou Byrne OAM (Class of 1976), who has been awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia in the 2026 King’s Birthday Honours List.
The honour recognises Mary’s service to the community through refugee support.
For more than two decades, Mary has dedicated her time to fundraising, advocacy and volunteer initiatives supporting refugees through Australia for UNHCR. Her work has included community fundraising events and the establishment of Rocky Road for Refugees, helping raise significant funds to support displaced people around the world.
More recently, Mary has helped foster opportunities for Monte students to continue this legacy of service through fundraising and social justice initiatives supporting refugees.
This honour reflects Mary’s longstanding commitment to compassion, service and advocacy for others.
The Monte community extends its warm congratulations to Mary on this significant achievement.

Flashback Friday!
For generations, the Athletics Carnival has been a highlight of Monte life.
These images from the archives capture different decades of House spirit, participation and friendly competition, while reflecting the important role sport plays in building confidence, resilience, leadership and belonging.
As the College prepares for this year’s carnival, we celebrate the traditions that continue to unite Monte students across generations and inspire young women to strive for their personal best.

Students and alumni. Shared experiences. Future possibilities.

Last night, students, parents, carers and alumni came together for Monte’s 2026 Student and Alumni Networking Event, an opportunity to connect learning with future pathways through the experiences of Monte alumni.

With more than 15 alumni representing fields as diverse as healthcare, law, human rights advocacy, finance, technology, media, recruitment and construction, students gained valuable insights into the many pathways available beyond school.

Through panel discussions and small group conversations, students heard first hand stories of career progression, challenges and success. These conversations extended learning beyond the classroom, helping students connect their academic studies with future opportunities and gain a deeper understanding of the knowledge, skills and capabilities required in a rapidly changing world.

A key message throughout the evening was that career pathways are rarely linear. By hearing from alumni at different stages of their professional journeys, students were encouraged to approach their futures with curiosity, adaptability and confidence.

With a global alumni network of more than 10,000 Monte women, students can draw on a powerful community of mentors, role models and industry leaders, gaining insights and connections that extend well beyond their years at school.

Thank you to the Monte Alumni Association for creating this opportunity, and to our alumni who generously shared their time, expertise and wisdom with the next generation of Monte students.

Following the exciting announcement that Monte is reinstating Years 5 and 6 education from Term One 2028, we’ve been looking back through the archives and found some wonderful gems from the College’s heritage in primary education.

These photos capture a special part of our history before 1979, when the Sisters of Mercy made the deliberate and courageous decision to focus on Years 7 to 12.

As we prepare to bring back younger students, we are proud to build on the Sisters’ founding legacy. This is a significant milestone for the College.

We are delighted to announce the reinstatement of Years 5 and 6 at Monte Sant’ Angelo Mercy College from Term One 2028.

Monte previously offered junior years education until 1979 when the Sisters of Mercy decided to prioritise Years 7 to 12. We are excited for the opportunity to continue the Sisters’ legacy.

The Years 5 and 6 program will be grounded in the Mercy values and academic rigour that define the College. Learning will meet the mandatory requirements of the NSW curriculum and follow the Baccalaureate (IB) Primary Years Programme (PYP) framework, encouraging curiosity and student agency.

We are hosting information sessions for interested families. Please register to attend via the link in our bio.

At the College’s ANZAC Day Ceremony, our community reflected on what service means then and now. Our Guest Speaker, Kathleen Cowan from the Class of 1997 and Monte parent, shared her journey from Air Force cadet to Qantas Captain, showing how service can grow, adapt and carry forward the ANZAC legacy.

Service is not only found in history, it lives on through everyday actions, responsibility, and the courage to lead. Lest we forget.

Many of us can point to a teacher, opportunity, or a moment at Monte that changed our path.
For some students today, a bursary makes that moment possible.
When alumni donate prizes for our auctions and raffles, they turn generosity into opportunity, transforming community support into real, life-changing outcomes. If you would like to contribute, please click the link in bio.

Thursday 12 March is School Archives Day, an opportunity to celebrate our College Archives.

Our Archives preserves the stories, achievements and everyday moments that have shaped Monte for more than 150 years. Through photographs, uniforms, documents and other treasures, the Archives helps us remember our Mercy heritage while supporting learning and community connection today.

The Archives is a resource for the whole Monte community, and supports classroom work, student and staff research projects, alumni reunions, and College celebrations.

We are blessed to be surrounded by Monte’s rich heritage every day, and the Archives plays a part in helping current students understand their place in this important legacy.

We welcome enquiries and donations to the College Archives. If you have a question for the Archives or an offer of donation, please get in touch with the College Archivist Ms Imogen Kennard-King via [email protected] or via the link in bio
