North Sydney RSL Sub-Branch was there for the Defence of Sydney Commemoration service held at the monument named in its honour, sitting above Sydney Harbour on North Head on Friday.
84 years after Sydney faced one of its most dramatic wartime moments.

Organised by the Australia Remembers Northern Beaches and North Shore Committee, the service honoured those who served in the defence of Sydney during World War II, the 19 members of the Royal Australian Navy and the two British sailors who gave their lives, and the Japanese Submariners carrying out their duty.

The 2026 commemoration brought hundreds of people together, including RADM Chris Smith, AM, CSM, RAN - Commander Australian Fleet, and representatives from NSW sub-Branches across Sydney’s North Shore and Northern Beaches and local schools.

Two North Sydney RSL Sub-Branch members also had representative duties in the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Servicemen and Servicewomen Commemoration Service, along with our Patron Felicity Wilson MP, at the Anzac Memorial as part of National Reconciliation Week.

The 20th annual service honoured Indigenous veterans who have served since the Boer War and combined military protocol with Indigenous ceremonies, including a traditional smoking ceremony and participation by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Elders, students, and current and former serving ADF members.

Another moving Dawn Service at the North Sydney Cenotaph commemorating all who served and are serving, in particular those making the ultimate sacrifice. The Australian Government has accepted a generous offer from the President of the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste, His Excellency Jose Ramos-Horta, to expand the eligibility criteria of the Timor-Leste Solidarity Medal.

Australian Defence Force (ADF) personnel and veterans, and Australian Federal Police (AFP) officers who served at least 30 days on mandated missions in Timor-Leste since 1999 will now be eligible. This includes those withdrawn due to injury or medical necessity and uniformed members of the Defence Cooperation Program and Timor-Leste Police Development Program.

North Sydney RSL Sub-Branch was able to support the Royal North Shore Hospital’s gathering of staff, community and service personnel to commemorate ANZAC Day in a moving ceremony of remembrance.

General Manager of RNSH, Alison Zecchin, reflected on the meaning of ANZAC Day, while Dr John Vassiliadis, a Captain in the Royal Australian Navy and an Emergency Physician at RNSH, spoke about the strong connection between healthcare and the defence forces through their shared values of service, sacrifice and care for others.

A Liturgy of Remembrance was delivered by hospital chaplain Peter Dowd, before Chris Greatrex from the North Sydney RSL Sub-Branch spoke on service and remembrance.

Wreaths were laid by hospital leadership, childcare children and hospital partners Ventia.
