Sydney Harbour’s latest 🔥 hot property isn’t above the water – it’s hanging right underneath it.
A number of purpose-built hanging habitats have just been installed beneath the floating jetties at Birkenhead Point Marina, making it the first marina in NSW to trial our newly designed fish habitat units.
The idea is simple: work with marinas to turn the space beneath existing jetties and pontoons into extra habitat for fish and other marine life.
As algae, shellfish, crustaceans and other marine life colonise the structures, they create increasingly rich mini-ecosystems – providing food and refuge in waterways where coastal development has reduced natural habitat and biodiversity.
Birkenhead Point Marina's International Clean Marina and Fish Friendly accreditation reflects their commitment to environmentally responsible practices and we’re hugely thankful to them for approaching us to trial OzFish’s first ever hanging habitat install at a marina Sydney.
With the program also currently being trialled Queensland, we’re hoping to see hanging habitats eventually providing homes for fish at marinas across Australia. ⚓
