A heartfelt thank you to Daniel Low
A huge thank you to Daniel Low for presenting to us about Camellias. Your wonderful and informative demonstration was greatly appreciated by everyone in attendance, and the students in particular found it both engaging and interesting.
Daniel is the current President — and a past President — of the NSW Camellia Research Society (NSWCRS). He is a qualified Horticulturist and Parks Manager, and his bonsai journey began in 2000 under the guidance of Sensei Ron (Ron Flack), later continuing with Betty (Elizabeth Simeonoff), Ray Nesci, George, Clinton, and Ted.

He is also a Qualified National Judge for Camellia Shows in Australia. In 2025, Daniel was invited to the International Camellia Congress in Tokyo, where he delivered a scientific paper on selecting and caring for Camellias in Australia — a presentation that was warmly received and widely praised.

Camellia blooms from Daniel’s garden in Pymble have won numerous prizes at both club and national levels, a testament to his deep knowledge and lifelong dedication.

Thank you again, Daniel, for sharing your time, expertise, and passion with us.
We are truly grateful.

The recent demonstration by Koji Hiromatsu at the School of Bonsai was truly something special, showcasing his remarkable skill and artistry. Watching Koji work on an already impressive, refined black pine and elevate it even further was an unforgettable experience. With the valued assistance of Evan Marsh and Sean Hood—both highly experienced and respected local bonsai artists—Koji was able to perform what felt like a miracle in the short time available. His thoughtful handling of the material made it clear why he is regarded as a master both in Japan and around the world.

It was also wonderful to hear the thoughtful questions asked throughout the demonstration, which really reflected the depth of knowledge and understanding within the audience.

A heartfelt thank you to everyone involved.

The School was delighted to welcome members and friends from the bonsai community, and it was a real privilege to host such a wonderful event—an evening where people could observe, learn, enjoy, and connect with one another.

Special thanks go to Evan Marsh, the School’s Vice President, for his incredible organisation—particularly across the three days of workshops and the evening demonstration. A big thank you as well to Vicky Gatt, Paulette DeMartin, Tony Miller, and the many other helpers who worked behind the scenes to make the event such a success.

We’re also very grateful to Michael Kempson and Evan Marsh for their generosity in providing accommodation and transport, and for making Koji feel so welcome during his visit.

I’m sure we’re all looking forward to welcoming Koji back to our community again soon.
