⚠️ Significant breaking news: NSW Forestry Corporation has today been sentenced in the NSW Land and Environment Court for illegally logging six giant trees and three hollow-bearing trees in Wild Cattle Creek State Forest in NSW in 2020. They have been sentenced to pay $450k in damages to the Gumbaynggirr People.

These offences occurred inside the boundaries of the promised Great Koala National Park, a commitment made by the NSW Labor Government at the 2015, 2019 and 2023 elections.

After a long delay and further submissions by Forestry Corporation, the court confirmed it has the power to impose more than a nominal penalty and direct funds toward restorative justice actions with the Yurruungga Aboriginal Corporation.

Forestry Corporation is a repeat offender with dozens of criminal offences charged against the government-run logging agency.

Wild Cattle Creek State Forest should have never been logged. Today’s decision is a reminder that illegal logging carries consequences and that the forests of the proposed Great Koala National Park must finally be safeguarded, including those that are classified as plantations, for koalas and other endangered species.

🔴 NSW Forestry Corporation must be shut down!

Excited to announce we’ll have One Thread Collective at our March Education Evening 🌾

Thursday March 26 - 7:30pm
Narrabeen Beach Surf Club

From our Australian team, thank you for being part of the One Thread Collective journey. Your support enables work rooted in culture, community and long-term impact.

In 2025, we focused on building meaningful relationships — strengthening our connection with local communities across Sydney, facilitating talks and workshops with high school students on leading with purpose, and proudly celebrating Colombian and Indigenous culture at the first Latin Christmas Market with

At the centre of our work is our partnership with the 120+ Wayuu women artisans in La Guajira. We are incredibly proud of our teams in Colombia and the USA for the milestones achieved this year, particularly in championing artisan rights and paving the way for Wayuu women to thrive as entrepreneurs, designers and leaders.

Looking ahead to 2026, we are excited to share that we will be hosting a Wayuu Art Expo in Sydney, unveiling a new collection that weaves together Australian and Colombian cultures. More details coming soon.

Stay connected and follow our journey as we continue to build bridges through art, culture and impact.

Sunday 1 March is the United Nations’ World Seagrass Day!

Dugongs, a CMS-listed migratory species, rely on seagrass meadows for food. These underwater habitats support rich marine life and are powerful nature-based climate solutions. 🐠

Though seagrass covers only a tiny fraction of the ocean floor, it stores carbon, improves water quality, and helps protect coastlines by reducing wave energy. 🌊

Protecting migratory species and their habitats strengthens climate mitigation and adaptation.

For the first time ever, a country has said animals are not objects. They are lives that matter.

In a historic move, Ecuador became the first nation in the world to legally recognize wild animals as beings with rights, not property for humans to use.

In 2022, Ecuador's highest court ruled that animals have the right to live freely and be protected from harm, cruelty, and exploitation.

This means people can now stand up for wildlife in court when animals are abused or their habitats are destroyed.

It's a powerful step forward for compassion, and a reminder that the world is slowly choosing kindness over cruelty.

Dive into this The Guardian explainer from Damien Gayle to learn more about the movement to make a crime.

While the term ecocide dates back to the 1970s, the movement to recognise it formally as the crime of mass harm to nature was revived in the 2000s by pioneering barrister and co-founder of Stop Ecocide International, Polly Higgins.

With ecosystems more under threat than ever before, the recognition of ecocide as a serious crime has grown exponentially in recent years.

The article discusses the movement at the international level, where the Pacific Island states of , and , along with the Democratic Republic of Congo ( ), are championing a historic proposal to establish ecocide as the fifth crime tried at the International Criminal Court - ICC.

Read the article: https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2025/may/28/what-is-ecocide-and-could-it-become-a-under-international-law

In addition to progress at the level of the ICC, the movement for ecocide law is also progressing at pace at the regional and domestic levels globally.

Ecocide-level crimes have been introduced in Europe through a revised Directive and a new Council of Europe treaty, while the African Ministerial Conference on the Environment (AMCEN) last year made ecocide a top continental strategy priority for 2025-27.

In domestic jurisdictions, ecocide law is already in place in France, Belgium and Ukraine, and legislative proposals are progressing through parliaments in , , , , , , the and others!

Do you want to stay up to date on ecocide law progress and find out what’s happening behind the scenes?
