This paramedic had a bottle smashed over his head while providing care to a patient.

When people assault our members, not only do most offenders walk away without any penalty, but they are able to call an ambulance the next day and get it for free.

In any other membership organisation, if you treated staff or volunteers as appallingly as some people treat our members, your membership would be suspended or cancelled.

28% of paramedics were physically assaulted last year. We are in desperate need of consequences for all forms of occupational violence including verbal aggression and abuse.

The Victorian Ambulance Union (VAU) is lobbying for a package of reforms to help protect our members and introduce consequences for behaviour that largely goes unanswered.

This is just one reform that is aimed at intercepting bad behaviour earlier than current laws do. Our members should not have to be bashed to the point of injury before there is a response to occupational violence.

If people are abusive or threatening towards our members, you should have to pay the full price for any future ambulance attendance. If they are physically violent, they should be criminally charged as well as no longer getting free ambulance.

The VAU stands in solidarity with doctors and allied health professionals taking industrial action today.

The last thing dedicated health workers want to do is take stop work action but what choice do workers have than to take action to get decent wages, conditions, and workloads.

That’s a wrap for VAU Delegates Conference 2026!

Patient Transport, Triple Zero Victoria and Ambulance Victoria, from all across the State, got together to network, train, plan and prepare for the industrial battles ahead.

Delegates also spent a full day debating and voting on the VAU Position Statements on matters important our members.

A Life Membership of the VAU was also awarded to former VAU President Bernard “Gossy” Goss for the massive contribution he has made to the VAU.

As a member, Delegate and State Councillor, it didn’t matter what part of the State we were taking action, Gossy would jump in his car and he would be there. He regularly represented members for us and ran local campaigns and actions.

Gossy was heavily involved in the initial set up of the VAU in 2019. Not only did he chair State Council and Conference for the past seven years, Gossy spent countless hours behind the scenes supporting the staff at the VAU.

We are grateful for his efforts and contributions towards the VAU.
