What an incredible opportunity.
Earlier this year, Louise Goss signed up for the Lead Your Way – Women in Football program, expecting a series of online webinars that would provide new ideas and leadership skills.
A couple of webinars in, participants were invited to attend a conference in Brisbane. Like many people, Louise's first reaction was to think of every excuse imaginable – it’s too hard, there’s not enough time, it won’t work. Thankfully, Mia Miller and the team at AFL Queensland had other ideas. Through Mia’s passion for developing women in football and supporting regional volunteers, six women were given the opportunity to travel to Brisbane, bringing together participants from Papua New Guinea, Cairns, Townsville, Mackay and Gladstone.
What followed was an unforgettable weekend.
Beyond the conference itself, the group shared stories, challenges, successes and experiences that only those involved in community football truly understand. They laughed, learned from one another and formed lasting friendships with women who simply “get” life in footy.
The conference featured inspiring speakers and practical leadership lessons. Hearing from Carol Fox and Keryn Fewster provided valuable insights into leadership, communication and creating positive change. A panel discussion featuring AFLW legend Erin Phillips, AFL Queensland Head Richie Lyons and community football champion Kate Guy offered honest perspectives on resilience, leadership and the future of the game.
One of the highlights of the weekend was stepping out onto the Brisbane Lions turf at Brighton Homes Arena – an experience Louise will never forget.
A special thank you goes to Lauren from Eastern Swans Australian Football Club for sharing the journey. The weekend provided a fantastic opportunity to discuss ideas and explore how, despite club rivalries on game day, clubs can work together off the field to strengthen not only their own organisations but football across the entire Mackay region.
Louise returns home inspired, motivated and excited to put what she has learned into practice. Leadership is a journey of continual learning, and this experience reinforced that communities are stronger when people collaborate, support one another and continue investing in those who make the game so special.
Finally, a sincere thank you to Mia Miller and AFL Queensland for believing in regional women and investing in opportunities like this. Without Mia’s dedication and commitment to the program, this experience simply would not have been possible. The impact of bringing women together to learn, connect and grow as leaders will continue long after the conference has ended, and Louise is incredibly grateful to have been part of it.
