A great few days at the European Cystic Fibrosis Society (ECFS) Conference 2026 in Lisbon. The meeting highlighted exciting advances in CF care, including prenatal use of Trikafta/Kaftrio (ETI), emerging gene editing and gene therapy approaches, and the ongoing search for more sensitive measures of early lung disease in the era of highly effective modulators.

It was also a fantastic opportunity to showcase our work, with Martin presenting a poster on our paediatric X-ray Velocimetry (XV) imaging studies and how this technology may help detect and monitor early lung disease in children with cystic fibrosis.

Looking forward to seeing how many of these promising developments translate into improved outcomes for people with CF over the coming years.

Research:
Did you know that chronic inflammation in CF may change the way airway cells behave?

Our research investigates EMT (epithelial–mesenchymal transition) — a process linked to airway remodelling and lung damage in cystic fibrosis.

Understanding these changes could help researchers develop new therapies aimed at protecting lung structure and function.

Fact:
Have you ever wondered where the term “65 Roses” comes from? 🌹

The story dates back to 1965, when a 4-year-old child heard the name of his disease for the very first time and pronounced cystic fibrosis as “65 Roses.”

Fact:
One of the major challenges in cystic fibrosis is chronic lung infection caused by bacteria such as Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

In CF, thick sticky mucus in the airways creates an environment where bacteria can persist and grow. Over time, chronic infections can drive inflammation and contribute to lung damage.

Research:
One of our key research areas is gene therapy for cystic fibrosis. We have be working in the area extensively for many years.

We use lentiviral vectors to deliver a functional copy of the CFTR gene to airway cells, aiming to correct the underlying cause of disease, rather than just treating symptoms.

This approach has the potential to provide long-term improvement in lung function and change the way cystic fibrosis is treated.

Fact:
Cystic fibrosis is a multi-organ disease, affecting the lungs, pancreas, intestines, sinuses and reproductive system.

While many parts of the body are impacted, it is lung disease that has the greatest effect on health and quality of life.

Research:
One of the key areas of our research is understanding how the lungs function.

We use a technology called X-ray Velocimetry (XV) to measure how air flows through the lungs in incredible detail. This allows us to identify which regions of the lung are working well and which are not.

By mapping ventilation in this way, we can gain deeper insights into lung disease and detect changes earlier.
