🔬 Research Group Spotlight: Reproductive Success

Robinson Research Institute’s Reproductive Success Group is helping advance fertility and IVF outcomes through innovative research spanning biology, engineering and the physical sciences.

Led by ARC Future Fellow Associate Professor Kylie Dunning, the group focuses on understanding and improving egg quality and early embryo development - two key determinants of reproductive success.

Using advanced, non-invasive imaging and light-based technologies, the team is developing more objective ways to assess the developmental potential of eggs and embryos. Working alongside clinicians, embryologists and industry partners, they’re translating these discoveries into practical tools that could improve assessment and selection during IVF.

One deeply personal story, yet an experience shared by many. 💜

Ella talks about her 8+ years long fertility and pregnancy journey – one of heartbreak, hope, loss and love – and the impact that stays with her for life.

It’s stories like Ella’s that show how deeply important advances in fertility and pregnancy research matter. Researchers at Robinson Research Institute are advancing new approaches to improve fertility, IVF and healthy pregnancy outcomes by uncovering the fundamental biology that underpins reproductive success.

From identifying how the ovarian environment, ageing, obesity and environmental exposures influence egg quality and early embryo development, to developing non-invasive imaging technologies that can better assess the health and developmental potential of eggs and embryos, this research is helping to shape the next generation of assisted reproduction.

Our scientists are also revealing the critical role of the immune system in conception and pregnancy, translating these discoveries into new interventions for infertility, recurrent miscarriage and IVF failure, including technologies that improve s***m selection and support embryo implantation.

What or who planted your Seeds of Science?

For National Science Week, we’re celebrating the moments, people and experiences that first sparked a love for science in our researchers.

For Stuti Saini, PhD Student with the Cystic Fibrosis Airway Research Group, that seed was planted back in Class 2, when she had the incredible opportunity to meet scientist and then President of India, Dr A. P. J. Abdul Kalam.

“I was too young to fully understand what being a scientist meant, but I just knew I wanted to be like him.”

Now working on her PhD, Stuti still carries that inspiration with her.

“I still aspire to be the kind, warm and humble person he was. That’s the kind of scientist, and person, I hope to become.”

Sometimes, one small moment can plant a seed that grows for a lifetime. 🔬

🔬✨ It's National Science Week!

Every great scientific discovery starts with a ‘seed’ - a question, a moment of curiosity, or the spark of an idea.

This year’s theme Seeds of Science acknowledges that nurturing those seeds starts long before someone becomes a researcher.
Through our community programs, we create opportunities for children, young people and the broader community to discover the science behind fertility, pregnancy, women’s and children’s health.

🔬 At Science Alive!, we took our research out of the lab and into the community, giving young minds the chance to get hands-on with science, ask questions and discover where curiosity can lead.

🌱 Through Future in Focus, we connect High School students with researchers and research careers, helping them see the possibilities that science can open up and perhaps plant the seed for a future in research themselves.

If you're a South Australian high school student in Years 10-12 with a passion for science, health or medicine, the Future in Focus program could be your first step towards an exciting career in research.

Through the Future in Focus Work Experience Program, you'll spend five immersive days exploring real research laboratories, meeting leading scientists and clinicians, tackling hands-on activities, and discovering how research is changing the future of fertility, pregnancy, and children's health. Eligible students can also apply for the Future in Focus Scholarship, with financial support to help them achieve their goals. Regional students may also be eligible for travel support. What a weekend! 🔬✨

We've had a blast meeting so many curious minds at Science Alive!

We showcased our interactive placenta model, put future sonographers to the test on a real-life ultrasound machine, demonstrated work and research in early-life health and so much more. It was wonderful to share the incredible work happening at Robinson Research Institute and inspire the next generation to explore the world of health and medical research.
