We would like to thank everyone who supported and attended our rally and helped to make it such a success. Our team came together to organise the event, and now that it's over, we've decided to take a break. Please keep spreading the word and encourage all Queenslanders to email the Premier ([email protected]) and their MP, to show their support for removing the shark nets at Noosa Main Beach during whale migration season! Sunshine Coast Councillor Joe Natoli also spoke in support of the move, saying “I drove all the way from Brisbane today to be here to support Frank and Noosa Council. Congratulations Frank, on your mayoral minute and resolution to ask the State government to remove the nets.”

He then commented that compared to the past, Sunshine Coast Council now has “more sympathetic Councillors, but we don’t have the numbers to get the same type of resolution.”

“In Western Australia, it was people power that brought about change to get rid of shark nets. In NSW, the same thing has happened.”

Addressing the crowd, he concluded, “It’s up to you to go out there and be the advocates… and convince other people that shark nets do not give you total protection.”

Noosa Mayor Frank Wilkie commended the State Government on the recently tabled KPMG Shark Control Program Evaluation Report, which he said “recommends the trial removal of shark nets during the whale migration season while using other methods such as catch alert drum lines and aerial surveillance drones.”

“The report indicates that measures other than nets can effectively target key predators and continue to offer protection to humans while significantly reducing deaths of non-target marine creatures such as dolphins, rays and turtles and dropping the rate of whale entanglements to zero percent.”

“The report studied shark control programs in other States and Countries and said Queensland was the only jurisdiction where shark nets remain in the water during whale migration season.”

“Noosa Council stands ready, alongside an alliance of business, swimming, surfing, community, scientific and environmental groups to support the State Government in trialling removal of nets during whale migration season.”
