Alongside the primary purpose of the program - protecting swimmer safety - research is underway to look at how we can even further prevent whales becoming entangled in shark control nets.
Last year I announced a five-week trial, now underway at Noosa Main Beach, trialling innovative acoustic technology designed to help humpback whales avoid nets while keeping beachgoers safe.
The trial is being conducted in partnership with Future Oceans and The University of Queensland, including independent land-based observations from the Noosa headland to record whale behaviour in the area.
