BSAC Weekly Summary

Lots of new faces at tonight’s meeting. A warm welcome to Alec, Teagan, Lee, Dylan and Hayley. It’s great to see the club growing and so much energy coming through the door. Pool training has been busy, busy, busy. On Sunday we had divers consolidating their ocean skills, brand‑new trainees getting started, and one refresher getting back on the bicycle. This week will be even bigger with seven students in the pool, so thank you to everyone helping keep things running smoothly.

The weather forecast is looking excellent with low winds all week and a dodge tide next Wednesday. That means plenty of opportunities for diving, so keep an eye on Signal for potential boat dives and night dives on Signal.

A quick reminder that we have a guest speaker next week, sharing insights into the whales and dolphins of South Australia. It’ll be a great session for anyone curious about our local marine life, so bring yourselves along and enjoy the evening.

We’re also launching a new club photo competition. It is open to all members. Any ocean‑related photo counts, and the winner will be chosen by people’s choice as our Photographer of the Month. If you’d like more detail, check out the photo competition rules on Signal.

And finally, Ang took out the Rock Vault this week, had a gamble, but alas didn’t walk away with the big bucks.

Great work from our Ocean Diver and Refresher trainees in the pool today. Solid skills, steady progress, and plenty of laughs along the way with our amazing instructors. BSAC Weekly Summary:

Dive debrief: Excellent weekend dives at Port Hughes and Port Victoria: Good vis, soft corals and sponges making a comeback, slimy mackerel in their usual end‑of‑jetty shoal, an octopus nesting with eggs, and seahorses. Great to see life returning to the razor fish beds too.
Second Valley (today): Beautiful topside conditions, blue devils, red snapper, crayfish, loads of kelp and colour, and soft corals returning.

Dive planning:
Sunday has potential if people are keen. Remember to pop it on Signal if you're planning to dive.

Thankyou to Gareth for sharing his UK diving adventures. Chilly 12 °C water but spotting lobsters galore, wolf fish and nudibranchs made it enjoyable.
He also touched on the National Instructor exam… rather him than us!

Training: October is a busy month for Ocean diver and Refresher training.

The club long weekend at Wallaroo did not disappoint. After a club mate dropped in at Wallaroo and reported the vis was awful, most of us gave it a miss and headed for Port Hughes and Port Victoria instead. Both sites absolutely delivered. Not loads of life but calm conditions and great visibility, which meant we could slow down, explore properly and scope out favourites. Our resident club members, Bruce and Sheila even managed to catch up with our ex‑club president at the local RSL before heading out to look for a Blenny.

BSAC Weekly Summary:

Plenty happening in the water this week. Donavan squeezed in a Porties sunset dive — calm conditions, vis over 5 m, 15°C, and loads of critters out and about: pistol shrimp snapping away, tommies cruising through, and a few blue swimmer crabs doing their thing.

Geoff had a cracking moment at O’Sullivans Beach, spotting a whale heading south.

Weather’s looking friendly for local dives with gentle winds and good tides. Donavan might pop out for a local dive at the weekend so watch out for details on Signal.
Wallaroo also shaping up nicely with Saturday and Sunday looking most favourable for those heading there for the long weekend. The plan is to likely dive Wallaroo and Port Hughes. Check Signal for dive plans for anyone keen to join for a day .

Our resident mascots Sheila and Bruce are still adventuring - follow their antics on Facebook.

A warm welcome to Amanda, who joined us tonight.

Heads‑up: the Lonsdale shop that does prescription masks is closing. If anyone knows another place that fits masks with prescription lenses, sing out.
