We have traveled to Mbantwe. This is the Arrente name for Alice Springs. We went there to learn about the work that needs to be done to maintain and keep our languages strong. So that we continue to speak our languages for no long time. The Salish people of Spokane in North America share the ways of bringing their language back.

Girrikirri is a Yolŋu practice and rom (law) of discipline. Women are the knowledge holders and have the responsibility of continuing girrikirri. It is the elders who guide ceremony and give discipline when Yolŋu go through the process of girrikirri. Holding the girrikirri between your teeth and feeling the heat and the sound of the biḻma and manikay. This rom reinforces self-discipline, respect and the gurruṯu expectations to close family and community. The ceremony of girrikirri is about practical application. The manikay in this ceremony grounds us in our relationships to people and place. It is about peace and harmony. It is your responsibility to take this self-discipline and learning and put it into practice and respect the rom of girrikirri.

Rarrtjiwuy presented alongside Ḏaŋanbarr from on a panel chaired by Mayaṯili Marika at the 2024 Garma Festival. The ‘Voices of the Future’ panel was a discussion about how these emerging leaders understand this year’s theme Gurtha Wuma Worrkgu, their thoughts post-referendum and the ways they are taking positive action in their communities.

They discussed the importance of creating space for the next generation of leaders and supporting the vision of the ŋaḻapaḻ (elders).

As Ḏaŋanbarr said,
Limurrdhu waŋgany manapanmirr ga dhärra ga djäma rrambaŋi ŋurruŋuny, ganydjarr manapanmirr.

They both called for young people to join them in this journey, to stand together and draw on the strength of Gurruṯu - their connection to each other.

Barŋ is a special ceremony women prepare for new babies and mothers. Barŋ heals the mother, promotes breast milk and nurtures the baby's sleep and feeding. It also promotes growth and keeps the baby strong. During this ceremony, the baby is spoken to and given raypirri by the women that have this role through gurruṯu. By continuing this ceremony, ŋaḻapaḻmi teach the young women how to continue and practise our knowledge.
