A major new peer-reviewed study in Conservation Letters (Ravishankar et al. 2026) has cast serious doubt on the science used to lift dingo protection in northwest Victoria in March 2024.
The Victorian Government and DEECA claimed “no dingo-dog hybrids” had been found in the Mallee and described the population as “pure dingoes”. DEECA overstated the original Cairns 2023 findings by presenting them as far more conclusive than the paper itself concluded.
The latest research indicates the 2023 Cairns study has likely been superseded. The Mallee dingoes continue to show the lowest ancestral genetic diversity of any mainland population.
