A major new peer-reviewed study in Conservation Letters (Ravishankar et al. 2026) has cast serious doubt on the science used to lift dingo protection in northwest Victoria in March 2024.
The Victorian Government and DEECA claimed “no dingo-dog hybrids” had been found in the Mallee and described the population as “pure dingoes”. DEECA overstated the original Cairns 2023 findings by presenting them as far more conclusive than the paper itself concluded.
The latest research indicates the 2023 Cairns study has likely been superseded. The Mallee dingoes continue to show the lowest ancestral genetic diversity of any mainland population.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT!

West Wimmera Action Group would like to sincerely thank everyone who took the time to respond to our fire surveys. Your input was invaluable and helped shape our recent fire reports. As a direct result of this work we have been invited to regularly meet with DEECA and FFM to discuss ways to improve fire management in our region. Our first meeting took place on 27 April, with Lauren Todman (District Manager) and Michael Condon (Deputy Chief Fire Officer) and Dom Uljanic (Senior Forest Fire Management Officer) and Lester Maybery, John Bennett, Justin Batson and Robert Maddern from the WWAG Committee of Management. We are looking forward to continuing this partnership and working together to achieve positive outcomes for our communities.

Annabelle's family got burnt out at Strathbogie and here is her passionate contribution to the current 2026 bushfire inquiry as an impacted community member. Interestingly she raises a lot of the same issue as we have in our fire report and submission to the inquiry. If this resonates with you, take the time to get in touch with your local member.
