Exploring language stories across collections

This week, participants in AIATSIS's Paper and Talk 2026 program visited the National Library of Australia to explore materials connected to their languages, families and communities.

Paper and Talk supports First Nations people to reconnect with language through historical records, build skills in linguistics, language teaching, and archival research, and continue language revitalisation work back home. By working together, AIATSIS and the National Library maximise the amount of important language materials and cultural knowledge participants can access while visiting Canberra.

Every discovery helps strengthen connections between language, culture, community and future generations.

We are one week into Paper and Talk 2026!

Participants from Warndarrang, Wemba Wemba, Mandandanji and Djukun Countries have spent the past week exploring language materials, engaging in language workshops, tours, and group work, and learning alongside each other at AIATSIS.

Thank you to Ngunawal Traditional Custodian Wally Bell for providing a Rite of Passage to participants on their arrival.
