Australia’s Longest-Living HIV Survivor Lyndal Johns Celebrates 80th Birthday

Lyndal Johns, believed to be Australia’s longest-living HIV survivor, has celebrated her 80th birthday surrounded by family, friends, and supporters, marking an extraordinary milestone in a journey defined by resilience, courage, and determination.

The Toowoomba resident reached the landmark birthday after living with HIV for more than four decades, a diagnosis she received in 1984 following a contaminated plasma transfusion at a Sydney hospital.

Long Term Survivors Awareness Day is this Friday 5 June

27/05/2026

Today marks the beginning of a time of healing and reconciliation in Australia.

Beginning with National Sorry Day, today we reflect on the mistreatment of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who were forcibly removed from their families and communities, who are known as the Stolen Generations.

It is a day to acknowledge the strength of Stolen Generations Survivors and reflect on how we can all play a part in the healing process for our nation.

This is followed by National Reconciliation Week which takes place from 27 May–3 June.

National Reconciliation Week is a time for all Australians to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation.

The theme for National Reconciliation Week 2026 is ‘All In’. This is a call for all Australians to commit wholeheartedly to reconciliation every single day.

Introducing the HIV FUTURES Impact report!

HIV FUTURES monitors the health, wellbeing, and life experiences of people living with HIV (PLHIV). It is the largest and longest running study of its kind in the world, having first launched in 1997.

This report, created in partnership with NAPWHA, Health Equity Matters and ASHM, explores the ways the HIV FUTURES studies have been used by the HIV sector, particularly the community-based sector, in informing policy development, advocacy work and service delivery.

From missed diagnoses to gaps in ongoing care, women with HIV are too often overlooked in Australia, especially in regional areas. Many are diagnosed late, often in GP settings where doctors may lack up-to-date HIV knowledge.

A new national audio-visual education tool, Women and HIV Today, aims to change this by equipping healthcare students and professionals with the knowledge to test earlier and care better. The project is being developed by Positive Women Victoria with a ViiV Healthcare Positive Action Community Grant awarded to NAPWHA.
