Ready for the Sydney Edible Garden Trail this morning.
We had lots of visitors through the garden and thoroughly enjoyed sharing our love of gardening with others.
Thank you to all the committee members for doing an amazing job in organising a successful trail. 🌱

I first heard about Kajari Melons 8 years ago and since then I’ve tried to successfully grow them at home without any luck but this year at the Community Garden, with lots more people caring for them - success!
Despite the 40 degree days, a cold patch at Christmas and terrible humidity these melons have powered on through.
The fragrance emitting from these small melons was enticing and mouthwatering, we weren’t disappointed! I was surprised by the size of the seed cavity compared to the amount of flesh but it was delicious!
With climate change altering our temperate climate I think these will be a great crop for home growers given they can handle our humid summers.

(*My home garden gets a lot of shade which is likely why these didn’t thrive at home)

The garden was glowing after the heavy rain last night. The small French Charentais melon had fallen off the vine and it smelled divine so we cut it up into 6 small wedges and the volunteers enjoyed it immensely. The fruit trees are starting to put on fruit again and the pumpkins have taken off down the hill.

The Tromboncino’s are beginning to form.
This heirloom squash (technically a fruit) originates from Liguria, Italy can be eaten like a zucchini when young, but as it matures the skin hardens and it can be cooked the same way you would cook a pumpkin. They can grow to 90cm long and do best growing on a trellis. Fingers crossed the flowers are pollinated and we can get some delicious fruit this year.

Good evening and welcome to the Zucchini pollination lesson.

Pic 3 & 4: female flower
Pic 5: male flower and stem
Pic 6: female ā€œstemā€ is the zucchini fruit you know. If the female flower isn’t pollinated the fruit will rot and die.
Now we hope the bees come to visit and transfer some pollen. šŸ
