Chamber Made's The Enormous Radio is a new large-scale immersive audio experience by artists Roslyn Oades and Bob Scott with collaborators. A ring of old radios replete with glowing dials, crackling speakers and twitchy antennas fill The Substation Main Space. This strange hive has been hacked, revived and repurposed to operate as an interconnected machine-medium capable of seeking, receiving, translating and transmitting uncanny messages from the animal world.

Drawing on Australian wildlife field-recordings, spatialised composition, translation software, and techno-spiritualism, the installation conjures haunted transmissions that speculate on the possibility of interspecies communication. As acoustic ecologists make breakthroughs in deciphering animal languages, this work asks: what if we could tune into the non-human, the endangered, and the wild? What might they say?

In the time of human-made climate emergency, The Enormous Radio stokes our longing to connect and tune into the unknown and the wild.

ABOUT BOB SCOTT/

Bob Scott is an internationally-awarded audio engineer, music producer and sound designer with over 20 years experience in music production, immersive mixing, theatre sound design, location recording, broadcast, film and audio consultation in Australia, Europe and Asia.

He’s collaborated with Roslyn Oades on many projects including The Nightline, Hello, Goodbye & Happy Birthday, I’m Your Man and Stories of Love & Hate.

Other recent works include Sound Design for Sydney Chamber Opera’s Howling Girls, Sound Design for Brett Dean’s Hamlet, audio post for Australian Chamber Opera & Jennifer Peedom’s films Mountain and River, and Johnny Greenwood & Australian Chamber Opera’s Water.

Bob is a recipient of various ARIA awards, Greenroom Awards, an Art Music award, a Tokyo Festival International Competition for Theatre award and an Australian Sound Guild Award.

ABOUT ROSLYN OADES/

Roslyn Oades is a Naarm-based theatremaker and dramaturg. As an artist, she harbours an ongoing fascination with innovative forms of creative-nonfiction storytelling and received the 2019 Green Room Award for Technical Achievement in acknowledgement of pioneering body of audio-theatre works.

Roslyn’s productions have been commissioned by RISING, Malthouse, Sydney Festival, Belvoir, Utp, Windmill, Vitalstatistix, Hothouse and 2018 Commonwealth Games.

Her original works for stage include: Hello, Goodbye & Happy Birthday, I’m Your Man, Creation Creation, Stories of Love & Hate, Fast Cars & Tractor Engines, Cutaway–A Portrait and the immersive work for children, In a Deep Dark Forest.

Her site-responsive audio installations include: Cell 26, an audio work for a prison bed, Sea Stories, an audio work for sunrise and The Nightline (co-created with Bob Scott) an underground club for insomniacs commissioned by RISING 2021 and presented at Carrefour International de Theatre (Canada), Sydney Festival, Adelaide Festival and Bleach Festival.

PRESENTED BY THE SUBSTATION

Meagan Streader's A Residual Pulse transforms The Substation into an immersive environment shaped by its hidden architectures and atmospheric systems. Drawing on the building’s history as a power conversion site, the exhibition traces The Substation's historical airflow pathways, structural geometries, and material imprints through light, flicker, and suspended form. Lines of illumination trace, extend and connect across multiple galleries. Suspended sculptures mimic the architectural frames and subtle air currents circulating through the building’s ventilation systems. A cluster of suspended neon forms echo absent hinges and machinery, hovering like fragments of an industrial afterimage.

Together, the works engage the building as a living structure - as though it were breathing air and pulsing with energy, accenting the memory of its past use. A Residual Pulse activates the physical fabric of The Substation to draw attention to the building’s history. It invites audiences into a world which explores the quiet convergence between past, present and future - as a site of ongoing transformation.
