Australia's first offshore aquaculture research trial in Commonwealth Waters - The Blue Economy Zone, has completed its first year of operation and the team will be hosting a webinar to share trial progress, learnings and what’s next.

Members of the team will take us through the findings from the first year of the trial published in the Year 1 annual report, covering the first twelve months of operation including the approvals and governance behind the trial, how the infrastructure has performed through a year of Bass Strait conditions, fish health and growth, the environmental monitoring results, what we heard from the community and the upcoming introduction of Yellowtail kingfish.

Today, our Director, Blue Policy and Planning, Susie Kropman, will take the stage as a keynote speaker at the Fremantle Innovation Exchange: Blue Economy: From Idea to Impact.

The Fremantle Innovation Exchange (FIE), a new initiative from the Fremantle Chamber of Commerce, is a curated event series bringing together innovators, founders and industry leaders across Fremantle’s key growth sectors.

Susie will share the work underway at the Blue Economy CRC, from our strategic direction and key impact pillars to key projects including the Blue Economy Zone Offshore Aquaculture Research Trial.

These next few weeks mark another significant milestone for the trial, with the introduction of kingfish supplied by the WA Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD) Marine Fish Hatchery – a real-world example of taking innovation from concept to reality through evidence, research and collaboration.

Abstract submissions are now open for the 46th International Conference on Ocean, Offshore & Arctic Engineering (OMAE) to be held on the 13th – 18th June, 2027 in The Hague, Netherlands.

The Blue Economy symposium will again be held as part of OMAE 2027, covering offshore aquaculture infrastructure, offshore artificial reefs, offshore aquaculture service vessels, multipurpose offshore platforms, and offshore hi-technologies for aquaculture farms and offshore renewable energy systems.

New research opportunity ~ Workforce and Work Health and Safety in Offshore Aquaculture.

Our final 2026 Round 1 EOI will examine the workforce and work health and safety requirements of offshore aquaculture, where maritime work, aquaculture production and remote operations come together within a single work system.

Building on previous BE CRC research, this work will explore where risks sit across offshore aquaculture operations and the workforce capability needed as the sector scales, including the challenges of distance from shore, emergency response and evacuation times, weather and shared responsibility for worker safety.

The research will support the development of evidence-based best practice guidance for workforce and work health and safety management in offshore aquaculture.

This research will identify and assess biosecurity risks associated with multiple offshore infrastructure types operating within the same marine location, including the introduction and spread of marine pests and diseases associated with offshore infrastructure, vessels and operational activities.

Drawing on Australian and international case studies and evaluating existing biosecurity management practices, the research will identify lessons learned and synthesise current best practice for biosecurity management across co-located offshore infrastructure.

New Research Opportunity ~ Offshore wind supply chains

We are seeking Expressions of Interest for new research to identify practical pathways for implementing resilient, efficient and competitive offshore wind supply chains in Australia.

Building on previous BE CRC research, this research will focus on translating previous findings into practical implementation pathways through industry collaboration and real-world case studies.

It will evaluate how Australian supply chains can transition towards increased local capability and regional industry participation, identify strategies to improve coordination between developers, ports, manufacturers, governments and service providers and develop practical recommendations that strengthen Australia’s offshore wind supply chains and maximise local industry participation.

New Research Opportunity ~ Biofouling Management in Offshore Aquaculture - EOI Now Open.

The Blue Economy CRC is seeking Expressions of Interest to extend our understanding and research in biofouling management in offshore and high-energy aquaculture environments.

Building on previous BE CRC research into biofouling communities, predictive frameworks and image analysis tools, this research will investigate how fouling develops and changes under offshore production conditions, where fouling pressure, infrastructure loading, access windows and cleaning costs can differ materially from inshore operations.

A key focus will be understanding how containment net cleaning influences which species recolonise, how quickly they return and which come to dominate, and what this means for net occlusion, fish health and cleaning strategies.

The research will support the development of evidence-based best practice guidance for biofouling management in offshore aquaculture production under our Developing Open Ocean Aquaculture Impact Pillar.

The Blue Economy CRC invites Expressions of Interest from our Participants in a series of proposed industry-focused research projects that will deliver the 2025 – 2029 BE CRC Strategic Plan and 2019 – 2029 research program.

Projects include:

#2: Implementing Best Practice Supply Chains for Australia’s Offshore Wind Industry
#3: Best Practice Biosecurity Management for Co-located Offshore Infrastructure

This week our Board and management team visited the recirculation aquaculture facility at IMAS / University of Tasmania where our kingfish will first be held when they arrive in September in preparation for stocking.

Our kingfish arrive from the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development hatchery, located in Fremantle WA and will weigh approx ~1g on arrival. They'll then be transported to our IMAS facility to commence their tank-based rearing phase, where they'll continue to grow to their target weight of around 150g before their transfer to the Bass Strait Research trial site at the end of this year.

Thank you to the team at IMAS including Sean Tracey and Maxi Canepa as we prepare for this exciting next phase of the trial!
