Through its pop-up thrift stalls, St Bernard's Hospice East London Hospice Shop has cultivated meaningful connections within the community, including with a group of talented and creative students.

One such student, Jonathan Thirlwall, chose to mark his 21st birthday on Youth Day (16 June) by hosting an art exhibition at the Hospice Shop in place of a traditional celebration.

This initiative resulted in a memorable day characterised by creativity, engagement, and a strong sense of community.

APCC commends this inspiring example of youth contributing positively within their community, and extends its congratulations to St Bernard’s Hospice for their innovative and thoughtful approach in making this opportunity possible.
We wish Jonathan continued success in his artistic journey.

Youth Day reminds us of the power, courage, and humanity of young people, and of our responsibility to protect the dignity and well-being of every child, especially those facing serious illness.
For many children and teenagers living with life-threatening or life-limiting conditions, childhood can become filled with hospital visits, pain, uncertainty, and interrupted milestones. Paediatric palliative care helps ensure that, even in the midst of illness, children can still experience comfort, play, connection, joy, and the simple moments that matter most.
Across South Africa, APCC members, alongside organisations such as Patch SA - Palliative Care for Children South Africa provide compassionate support to children and families navigating complex care journeys, offering pain and symptom management, emotional support, and care that extends beyond the patient to the entire family.
This Youth Day, we honour the resilience of young patients, the love carried by their families, and the healthcare professionals who walk beside them every step of the way.

Healthcare systems make funding decisions based on data every day.

But what happens when the outcomes that matter most to patients aren't being measured?

In his latest IT News Africa article, APCC CEO Motlalentoa Motsoane explores why measuring patient outcomes is essential if healthcare systems are to move beyond funding activity and start rewarding value.

Real strength is taking your health seriously.
Men are often taught to push through pain, stay quiet, and keep going. But looking after your health is not weakness. It’s responsibility.
This Men’s Health Month, the APCC encourages men and boys to take their health seriously: to ask questions, seek support, and not wait until things become critical.
Across South Africa, APCC members provide compassionate palliative care to men facing serious illness, offering pain management, emotional support, home-based care, and dignity throughout every stage of the journey.
No one should have to face illness alone.

National Cancer Survivors Day is not only about survival. It’s about the lives rebuilt between treatments, the quiet courage behind closed doors, and the people who continue showing up. Even on the hardest days. Behind every survivor is a network of support: families, caregivers, healthcare professionals, and organisations working to ensure that no one faces cancer alone.
At the APCC, we recognise that cancer care does not end with treatment. Through compassionate palliative care, our members help patients live with greater comfort, dignity, and support, improving quality of life at every stage of the journey.
Today, we also recognise the important role played by CANSA The Cancer Association of South Africa , whose work spans cancer education, screening awareness, patient care and support services, counselling, medical equipment hire, survivor programmes, and advocacy for improved access to cancer care across South Africa.
Together, we continue advocating for care that sees the whole person. Not only the diagnosis.
