Today, we join communities across Australia in marking National Close the Gap Day.🟠
Community Voices: The Pathway to Justice, Equality and Healing — this year's theme resonates with everything we do at Embrace People & Place. We know that genuine change doesn't come from the top down. It comes from community — from people being heard, respected, and given the power to shape their own futures.
We are proud to work alongside Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities in the Hunter region, and on this day, we recommit to that partnership. Closing the Gap demands more than goodwill — it requires structural reform, shared decision-making, and accountability from all of us.
Our values of family, integrity, partnership, and courage remind us that we must be willing to act — even when change is complex and slow — because the people at the centre of this story deserve nothing less.
Today, we invite you to be part of the conversation. Join the online launch of the 2026 Close the Gap Report this morning, featuring insights from leaders working toward justice, equality, and healing for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. The event is hosted by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Social Justice Commissioner Katie Kiss and runs from 10:30 am to 11:45 am (AEDT) via Microsoft Teams.

Yesterday we celebrated someone very special here at 437 Hunter! ☕💛
We gathered with our in-house partners to congratulate Bob O'Toole — Co-Founder and Chairperson of the Clergy Abused Network — on his Order of Australia, awarded for his service to the community through support for survivors of childhood abuse. What an incredible honour, and so well deserved.
The Clergy Abused Network offers compassion, hope, and connection to survivors of clergy abuse — and the work Bob has championed makes a real difference in people's lives.
But as Bob himself made clear this morning, this award belongs to two people. His wife Bev has been by his side every step of the way, and the whole team wanted to make sure she was recognised too. Congratulations, Bob and Bev! 💙
We're so proud to share our home at 437 Hunter with the Clergy Abused Network and the wonderful people behind it.

International Women’s Day is not just a celebration. It is a call to action.
At Embrace People & Place, we stand for women’s rights, leadership and economic security — and for a future where gender equity is not aspirational, but expected.
Earlier this week, members of our team joined the Ian & Shirley Norman Foundation’s International Women’s Day Conference welcome gathering, alongside women from across Australia who are challenging inequity, advocating for systemic change and strengthening their communities.
We know that progress does not happen by accident. It happens when women are resourced, trusted and supported to lead — in workplaces, in community organisations, in decision-making spaces and beyond. It happens when barriers are named and addressed.
Today, we celebrate the women we work beside. And we recommit to the work still to be done because when women and girls stand equal, families are stronger, workplaces are fairer, communities thrive, and society becomes safer for everyone.
Happy International Women’s Day.💜

Community message
We’re disappointed to share that our building at 437 Hunter Street in Newcastle has been vandalised with graffiti again.
This isn’t a one-off. Each time this happens, it costs time and money to repair and creates unnecessary disruption for the people who work in and around the building — and for our neighbours. The photos show the damage that has been caused.
In the most recent incident, we have CCTV footage showing the culprits accessing the property to spray paint the side of our building.
If you recognise this graffiti or know who might be responsible, we ask that you please have a conversation with them and encourage them to stop. This behaviour has real consequences for others, and it needs to end.
We’re proud to be part of the Newcastle community and want to keep our shared spaces safe, respectful and welcoming for everyone.
Thank you to those who help look out for our city and each other.

What happens after a woman leaves prison matters — to her, her family, and all of us. Too often, women exit custody without stable housing, income or support, and end up back in the system. That’s why we’re so excited about our new Women in Community Program — a local pilot designed to help women rebuild their lives with dignity, connection and real opportunity.

This work reflects our commitment to connection, possibility and structural change — and shows what’s possible when philanthropy, government and community organisations work together.

Embrace People & Place shares the heartbreak of our nation in response to yesterday’s horrific attack on the first evening of Chanukah at Bondi Beach. In Australia, every person has the right to gather, practice their faith and celebrate their culture in peace and freedom. We unequivocally condemn this terrorist attack, which is an assault on all human dignity. We weep with the Jewish community who have lost their loved ones.
Despite the darkness, we have to hold onto the truth that there are more people who want to help than those who want to do harm – yesterday’s courageous first responders, brave members of the community who took action to keep people safe, and today people lining up to urgently give blood – this is who we want to be – this is who we are. Our faith leaders, elected leaders, community leaders and everyday Australians who are reeling from last night’s unspeakable violence must call for unity and peace and not permit us as a nation to descend into this insanity.
Let us all walk together in kindness as in the light, darkness dissipates

Yesterday, the 437 Hunter team came together for a morning tea to mark the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence.
We gathered to connect, reflect, listen and stand in solidarity — recognising that ending gender-based violence begins with conversation, community and collective action. Thank you to everyone who joined us, shared space, and contributed to creating a moment of meaning, support and hope.

As one attendee shared:
"Today, the Embrace People and Place team and our wonderful in-house partners gathered over a morning tea for the 16 days of activism to end gender based violence. It was a meaningful event that allowed us to connect with each other, share stories, and reflect on the importance of creating safe and respectful communities for everyone. Every conversation counts in collectively dismantling violence and supporting equality for all."

Another reflected:
“Today's morning tea was great to see connection with services and a bunch of conversations and people from all services joining together to support and not be afraid to stand together to end gender based violence.”

And:
“Gathering and meeting with the in-house partners over delicious food was just so good, meeting new people I had not met, and we are all here to do amazing things in the community. Sharing the inspiring story that I heard at the Domestic Violence Forum helped me to identify with my own personal story, and in doing so, I released some of the trauma I have carried myself for so many years.”

Thank you for showing up, standing together and being part of the change.
