Merewether Mackerels The Merewether Mackerels are the premier Winter Swimmng Club in the Newcastle area (just ask any of our members).

The club was formed in 1972 by members of the Merewether Surf Life Saving Club. The club welcomes swimmers of all ages (our youngest member is 11, our oldest 98) and abilities. The Mackerels are the only club in the district to proudly accept men and women members. We swim every Sunday morning (swimming starts at 8.30 am) from May through to September at the magnificent Merewether Ocean Baths, located in Merewether, Newcastle. Mackerels held the John Hawthorn Shield on Sunday. John was a long time member who had passed and this Shield is held every season in memory of John.
Annika James has been a think in nearly every Final this season and hasn’t been able to snag a win. But on Sunday Annika won the John Hawthorn Shield. All competitors gave a nominated time to swim 50meters and the closest to their time is the winner. Annika nominated 35.05 sec and did exactly that time.
