Reclaim the Night Newcastle

Reclaim the Night Newcastle We are in Newcastle AUSTRALIA: Reclaim the Night is, and always has been, a protest about ending sexual assault and violence against women.

Reclaim the Night is, and always has been, a protest about ending sexual assault and violence against women. It asserts that every woman has a right to live their life free from violence, r**e or fear. It is an event for women, and is inclusive of all women (cis and trans). Reclaim the Night is an annual event. It has been held on the last Friday in October for more than 40 years. Common Questions

:

Q: Can men march? A: The march component of the event is exclusively for women (cis and trans), and we ask everyone to please respect this.

- Men (trans and cis) are very welcome to support the event by listening to the speakers at the beginning, enjoying the entertainment after the march, lining the footpath during the march, but we ask that you respect the march is an autonomous space. If you would like to know more ways about how you can support this event, please message us.

- Women (trans and cis) and children* are welcome for the entire event: The pre march speakers in the park, the march, and the entertainment after the march.
* Please note if you are bringing children, that speakers, signs, chants etc will name and make reference to sexual assault and violence.

- Non binary people are very welcome to participate in a way that feels best for them

***CONTENT WARNING *** The film covers the topic of female sterilization. While we don’t see operations being performed, the characters suspect something is going on. The film tells the story of young girls removed from their homes because they were considered naughty or delinquents. Some are removed from their communities because of pregnancies outside of wedlock. This is briefly mentioned, and we do not see the consequences of this

Violence against women and girls (VAWG) remains the most prevalent and pervasive human rights violation in the world.

🔸 Globally, an estimated 736 million women - nearly one in three - have experienced physical and/or sexual violence by an intimate partner, non-partner sexual violence, or both at least once in their lives.

🔸 In the past year alone, 1 in 8 women and girls aged 15-49 has faced intimate partner violence.

🔸 In 2022, on average, more than five women or girls were killed every hour by someone in their own family.

🔸If there is no accelerated action, 9 million girls will still marry in childhood by the year 2030.

🔸 Globally, over 230 million girls and women have undergone female ge***al mutilation, representing a 15% increase - or 30 million more girls and women - compared to data from eight years ago.
