“Aurora” exhibition at Back to Back Galleries runs from 11-27 September 2026 🌃🌠 Opening Celebration Saturday 12 September 2-4pm
A sky of lime to a darker green and shading to purple, pink, red and sometimes blue and yellow. This remarkable spectacle leaves skywatchers mesmerized and mystified. These artists have taken this colour palette and applied it to Nature - the fields of wildflowers, the reflection in the lakes, the lichen and moss, the trees, the wider habitat landscape, and the coastal vistas of the arctic countries. Artists:
Janet Steele: “Janet Steele is a textile artist whose work is inspired by nature. Her pallet was extended after spending winter inside the Arctic Circle in search for the Northern Lights. For this exhibition Janet has created art by knotting threads and coloured cloth by ice dyeing.”
Sharon Taylor: Sharon has used ‘dark matter’ clay to imagine the landscape at night, dark horizons and the glowing skies of the Aurora.
Giovanna Fallavollita: This phenomenon from solar winds colliding with gases gives us the most striking show of colours. Aurora brings about curtains of colour in pinks, reds, lime greens and purples that I have captured on my canvas showcasing the vivid, stunning colours and shapes.
Claire Kemp: I am captivated by the imagery of the dwellings that dot the landscape at the edge of the lakes in Norway and Finland. These dwellings, seen in daylight or under an Aurora sky, displayed a mix of colours and construction, bright and subdued, sturdy and uncomplicated.
Ileana Clarke: Inspired and challenged to capture the translucent glow of Auroras I thought of Mark Rothko, a master of colour. Therefore, water colours with the ability of producing transparent vibrant layers, became my chosen medium.
Denise Spalding: My collection of specimen vases and large round forms are a canvas for depicting the plants that flower and flourish in the Northern Countries. The colours of the aurora, lime-pink-purple-blue-yellow, are the colours also found in nature.
