Outfit Newcastle

Outfit Newcastle Out(fit) is a group of volunteers drawn from the architecture and design professions.

We undertake community specific projects in the Newcastle, Hunter Region and Regional NSW area. In a study conducted by the Australian Government ‘Workplace Gender Equality Agency’ in 2014-2015, data presents minimal shifts (2.3% rise in last two years) towards obtaining workplace equality. Although employers are slowly implementing strategies to gain a balanced gender composition in the workforce,

eliminate gender pay gaps and promote equal employment arrangements and career advancements, further strategies can be implemented to raise awareness of these inequalities. Within the Architecture profession, the ‘Parlour’ website was established in2012 as a space for discussion, debate, resources and research, providing a firm evidence base for the need to change views towards

women, equity and architecture in Australia (Parlour Website, accessed 2016). Sharing similar views and ambitions to the Parlour movement, the out(fit) project is a self initiated and hands-on, design-research project-based program, focused on providing equal opportunities for women within the design and construction professions. The bottom-up, DYI procurement methodology primarily focuses on social ambitions, community and equity. Through a series of design-build demonstration projects built by women from multiple disciplines, this design approach aims to showcase women within these professions as self-empowered project initiators and builders. The out(fit) initiative encourages the support of the community, local government and industry professionals with many opportunities to get involved. All project supporters will have their logo implemented within all marketing material associated with the initiative. In addition, project supporters will have the opportunity to contribute to and be part of vital research outcomes. Sponsorship & support can be contributed through the below opportunities:
