The HWWC's statement on the deeply concerning rise of anti-trans commentary in Australian politics:

Hunter Workers Women’s Committee is proud to stand in solidarity with all women, including transgender women. We especially recognise the trans women who serve on our committee and strengthen our movement.

At a time when divisive rhetoric is being used to pit women against one another, we reject attempts to turn women’s rights into a culture-war weapon. Women’s rights have always advanced through solidarity, not exclusion. We are lifted up together.

Attacks on transgender people, particularly trans women, do not make women safer. They distract from the real issues women face: gendered violence, insecure work, unequal pay, harassment, discrimination, barriers to healthcare, and the ongoing struggle for dignity and respect in our workplaces and communities.

Reducing women to narrow definitions of “biological sex” harms all women. This idea has been imported by right-wing lobbyists, and it reinforces the belief that women’s bodies, identities, and lives are open to public scrutiny and control. That kind of rhetoric has never served women, and it does not serve us now.

Hunter Workers Women’s Committee stands with cis women, trans women, sistergirls, and all gender diverse people facing discrimination and exclusion.

Solidarity means recognising that an attack on one part of our community weakens us all. We choose unity over division.

Please join us for our annual vigil to remember and honour those killed this year due to domestic and family violence.

(Samdon St side, near the memorial tree)

This peaceful, respectful remembrance will include
