CoastCanCare is a wellness program where local adults with cancer, their family members and carers have wellness activities in accessible venues across the Central Coast.
The works were filled with yarns, weaving lessons, sharing and laughter. Our project was to create a sculptural piece that represented the personal journeys and the Country we came together on. We chose the turtle.
Many participants spoke about wanting to feel proud and connected. The project allowed the artists to tell stories that reflected on Country and their experiences of healing. The turtle became symbolic of resilience, movement and the importance of slowing down and caring for ourselves and each other.

EAST MAITLAND PUBLIC SCHOOL
Artwork Giant Emu
Groups involved: Stage 3 students from East Maitland Public School.
Cultural Teachers Jamie Carpenter, Elizabeth Howard and Cherie Johnson
Artist Statement
For Stage 3 students at East Maitland Public School the design and completion of our Emu sculpture has been an amazing experience that transported us into learning narrative by song and Aboriginal history and culture.
The Emu was inspired from local Aboriginal astronomy and the story of the Emu in the Sky constellation. The students worked together to explore stories, identity and Aboriginal perspectives.
The weaving incorporated a strong link to nature with the use of natural materials and balancing really through the repetitive nature of the activity. The students found a great mindfulness activity and a means for many connections around Aboriginal history and culture both at school and at home.
Our students chose the Emu as it doesn’t take backward steps. This therefore symbolised East Maitland Public School and our school values and future direction moving forward together.

Full Artist Tawny Frogmouth The students from Maitland Public wanted to represent the Tawny Frogmouth breeding pair that reside a large tree on the grounds of the school. It was discussed to look at the birds as being camouflage into their surroundings, a position or window at night on one second story of the classroom building. It was decided that they would represent the Tawny Frog by through the fog by feet to show that they are the birds there stealthy, silent flight.
Artist Statement for ‘Parky’
During discussions, the majority of students noted the Tawny Frogmouth family that lives within the school playground. After much discussion, we also noted that there was another owl who is special, being Parky, who is the PBL mascot. The students decided it would be great to create a Parky.

Artist StatementWe chose to make a Koala to represent the many whose lives were lost during the devastating bushfires of 2020. The black line borders especially helped some students to show how they felt or covered in embers after being burned.
All the school students from kinder through to year 6 participated. The kinder to year 2 students came up with a wonderful idea of making pom poms to create fluffy ears and a tail while older students explored coil weaving techniques and collaborative construction methods.
Throughout the process students discussed the importance of helping one another during emergencies, caring for wildlife and protecting Country. The sculpture became symbolic of resilience, healing, compassion and community connection after a difficult period for many families and communities.

Hamilton Child Care has had a long-standing relationship with Speaking in Colour and was extremely proud to be asked to participate in this amazing project. The childcare staff and families have been developing our reconciliation Action Plan over the last twelve months and looking at ways to authentically engage with our local Aboriginal community, providing our children with important learning, especially in relation to land and connection to Country.
The development of our children’s knowledge is a lifelong learning process and our Respect Educators are proud to foster this knowledge in a respectful and meaningful manner for our young children. Our three- to five-year-old children worked together to create our Wallaby as we had learned that our centre built on Awabakal land was once part of the same Awabakal gathering place specifically linked to women’s business.
As the children sat with Jamie and learned to weave, they shared stories of connection and friendship, learning not only the importance of caring for Country but also building a deeper understanding of the importance of caring for each other. This was a wonderful opportunity to empower our young children with knowledge, skills and understanding through relationship and the ancient art of weaving and look forward to further opportunities for learning and collaboration with the talented artists and educators from Speaking in Colour. We are sure everyone would agree, our Wallaby is quite striking!

Artist Statement During discussions, the students talked about the story of Tiddalik and reflected on the burden of greed. Students explored the idea that if Tiddalik holds all the water, others suffer. The work became a reflection on the importance of sharing, caring for resources and supporting community wellbeing.
The years involved really enjoyed the program, but the opportunity to share their learning through the school NAIDOC celebrations meant many workshop participants were able to support more students through the learning process.

Artist Statement:
Glendale Technology High School has been participating in the Resurgence program for a few years now. The school believes this program has been beneficial to all students, as this program was offered to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students whilst being extended to any non-Indigenous student who wanted to participate as well. This worked well for inclusivity with more than 30 students participating from years 7-10. The students chose the school’s mascot the “Goanna” for the program. They chose the Goanna for its representation of Strength. At Glendale Technology High School, we encourage all students to show their strengths and share them with the community. We believe this program worked well for all the students involved. Jaimie from Speaking in colour was wonderful with the students and formed bonds with all the students which helped in making them feel welcomed

Artist Statement: St Philip’s Christian College – DALE, chose to be a part of this program for a wide variety of reasons. To experience and understand indigenous culture is something that we strive towards and all of our students love. Our students found this program very therapeutic as they weaved and shared stories amongst one another. We chose to weave the galah as this is a beautiful creature, native to our area and there is a connection we can draw between our students and watching a galah soar through the air. It was important for us to be part of the program as many of our students had heard about weaving but not been given opportunity to experience it for themselves. This was a combination of 3 of our campuses: Newcastle, Gosford and Cessnock with our students ranging from 12 – 15 years of age. St Philip’s Christian College – DALE is proud to be a part of the program and we hope you can enjoy our galah’s.

Artist Statement: We have learnt to weave and make coils and bracelets. We stitched together our bracelets and coils to the wire frame of a possum.

The possums are always climbing around in the trees at our school and in our area, they were very useful. When our Elders walked across our land they used the possum skins to make cloaks. Possum skin cloaks were used for wearing and keeping warm in the winters. Our stage has had a lot of fun creating a work of art that we will remember for many years. We want people to connect with the Indigenous people and to feel a sense of enjoyment when they are around our art. This possum is for all of us, our school, our community and everyone who has been a big part of Indigenous culture. We say thank you to the ladies for helping us learn about this amazing culture and would like you to keep sharing your knowledge with others.
