Welcome, Ailsa!
We'd like to welcome Ailsa Sypkes to the Story Island Board as Treasurer/Public Officer. Ailsa is a legal and governance professional with nearly three decades of experience spanning private practice, government and in-house roles. We're excited to be taking applications for a new Story Island role: Program Coordinator! This part-time role (12 hours per week / 0.32 FTE) will be responsible for recruiting, training, rostering and debriefing our volunteer tutors, and coordinating and managing our program bookings with schools. It's Book Week! 📖❤🙌
While Book Week can get a little overshadowed by the annual scramble for costumes, at its heart it's a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the 'Symphony of Stories' on offer in the world of children's literature.
Story Island office dog Elsie has taken things one step further, choosing a story written BY kids, FOR kids as her Book Week read – a Story Island anthology written by Primary School students in 2024.

We're excited to share the news that Story Island is a 2026 MyState Foundation Grant Recipient! 💚🙌 This grant funding will allow us to develop and deliver a pilot school holiday program this summer, allowing young participants to continue their literacy/storytelling journeys outside of the classroom.

We're proud to be one of the organisations receiving support as part of MyState Bank's commitment to helping young Tasmanians learn, grow and reach their full potential.

Welcome, Rebecca!

We'd like to welcome Dr Rebecca Chabot to the Story Island Board as a general member. Rebecca is a PhD ecologist, TEDxHobart speaker, and founder of Pure Wellness Tasmania, where she translates neuroscience and ecological science into evidence-based strategies for human health and performance.

It was truly the end of an era at our recent AGM, as we said the fondest of farewells to our beloved Treasurer/Public Officer, Heather Chong. Heather is the longest-serving Board member in the history of Story Island, having joined us in late 2018.

In that time, Heather has been our most cheerful champion, providing critical operational support as we’ve grown our financial management processes, while rolling her sleeves up at all manner of Story Island events (Heather is an excellent bartender!). We're beyond grateful to Heather for her many years of service to Story Island, and wish her all the very best for the future.

🍔🍔🍔🗳🗳🗳 For the month of August, Story Island is starring in Grill'd North Hobart's Local Matters program – and we need your vote!

Each month, Grill'd North Hobart donates a total of $500 to three local charities. Each customer receives a token to place in a jar for the charity of their choice. At the end of the month, the charity with the most tokens receives $300, while the others receive $100.

So if you're feeling peckish, head to Grill'd and vote for Story Island when you order!
