September is Prostate Cancer Awareness Month! Be aware of the symptoms and if you notice a change visit your doctor.

This type of cancer is one of the most commonly diagnosed cancers in Australia. The Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia is trying to help raise awareness, collect donations and fund research to help save the lives of Australian men to help defeat prostate cancer.

🤳💻 Scams Awareness Resources Available at RPH 🤳💻

Last week, we hosted a Scams Awareness Information Session in honour of Scams Awareness week. During this event, information about how to identify scams, how to avoid them, and steps to take if you think you're being targeted were taught to those that attended.

🫁💨Learn More During National Asthma Week 🫁💨

Asthma deaths are preventable.

Annual ABS data commissioned by National Asthma Council Australia reported there were 478 asthma deaths in Australia in 2024.

The best protection against death from asthma is treatment with an inhaled corticosteroid.

The Australian Asthma Handbook guidelines now recommend anti-inflammatory reliever (AIR) only therapy and maintenance-and-reliever therapy (MART) for adults and adolescents, aged 12+.

Treat the inflammation, not just the symptoms.

This session is in partnership with Building in Tasmania - CBOS Consumer Affairs and Fair Trading Tasmania - CBOS and is free for anyone to attend. During this session, you'll learn about ways to spot common scams and how to protect against them.

💚🍰🎈 Happy 60th Anniversary Corumbene 💚🍰🎈

Today, August 15th is the 60th anniversary Corumbene opening its doors in New Norfolk. In honour of this historic moment, we held a celebration yesterday at our Lower Road residential facility in the Multi-Purpose Room. Residents, community members, staff, volunteers, past and present board members, local politicians, and more joined us for this great occasion.

The afternoon celebration started off with everyone getting settled in, finding a spot to sit, getting a cuppa and a bite to eat, including incredible jelly cakes by our very own Liz Stevens, delicious ArtHouse platters and scones from The Quilted Teapot, while chatting away with friends old and new. The room was decorated with Corumbene green balloons and streamers and historical placards dotted on the walls.

Once everyone had arrived, Chief Executive Officer Alison Standen started off by giving a lovely speech about Corumbene and before letting the President of the Board Ross Carlyle give a speech. Ross beautifully described the history of the organisation these past 60 years. Alison then introduced Craig Farrell MLC who gave a delightful speech about his connection with Corumbene and the local Rotary Club. To complete the speeches, Alison spoke about her time at Corumbene and thanked everyone for joining us that day. She also highlighted how much these kinds of celebrations matter in a community like and the .

After all the speeches were given, Craig and Ross had the honour of cutting the delicious cake made by My Sweet Tucker. Everyone was able to enjoy a slice of the yummy and beautifully decorated vanilla bean cake and spend the rest of the event chatting and reminiscing together. Before leaving, everyone picked up the commemorative booklet about Corumbene's 60-year history and a branded vanilla bean biscuit as a souvenir.

👋 👩‍⚕️What Is a Care Coordinator and What Do They Do? 👋👩‍⚕️

A Care Coordinator is someone who helps people with long-term health conditions get the support they need. They work in places like the GP clinic or community health centre and their main job is to make health care easier to understand and easier to manage.

Many people with ongoing health issues see lots of different professionals—doctors, specialists, physios, dietitians, and more. This can feel confusing or overwhelming. A care coordinator helps bring everything together. They make sure everyone involved knows what the client needs and what the plan is, so nothing gets missed.

Care coordinators also spend time helping people learn more about their condition. They explain things in simple language, help set health goals, and give tips for managing symptoms at home. They check in regularly, by phone or in person- to see how things are going and whether anything needs to change.

Another important part of their role is helping with everyday challenges that affect health. This might include linking people with transport services, financial help, mental-health support, or community programs. They understand that good health isn’t just about medical appointments, it’s also about having the right support in daily life.

Care Coordinators need to have good general knowledge of what’s happening in the community, be a part of local provider and networking groups. A Nurse Care Coordinator will often have qualifications in chronic disease management, and increase their knowledge base constantly for up-to-date management pathways; We learn to be able to pass on the knowledge to our clients!

Overall, a care coordinator helps people feel more confident, supported, and in control of their health. They make the health system easier to navigate and help prevent problems before they become serious.
