CLARIFICATION
No change will be made to sports or Kidโs in the Valley holiday programs.
There are NO plans to sell this important asset, now or in the future.
The Sports Centre is a sports centre and will remain available for this and other compatible recreational purposes.
The greatest impact will be to the after school drop-in centre. Council will be requesting expressions of interest to run a service from another site.
22 organisations INCLUDING PCYC have been approached to apply to run this service.
The Sports Centre has been our evacuation centre for years, and yes, we do expect fires and flooding to affect our region at some point.
Our youth matter very much to me, hence the Youth Summit and the many actions that have come from it.
This decision of council has impacted my family too. Our youngest son is a very proud PCYC volunteer, and helped run the most recent holiday programs. When I return home from representing the Derwent Valley up north this week I will have my own upset boy to contend with.
I canโt always tell you everything. There are legal and reputational matters to consider.
Council exists to serve community (at least under my leadership), and I am not sorry for making difficult calls that best serve our town (please note that this action arose from a vote of council, and was not my call alone).

Derwent Valley Sports Centre
At last weekโs meeting of Derwent Valley Council it was determined that the PCYC lease on the Derwent Valley Sports Centre come to an end.
This decision was made for a number of reasons, including the Sport Centreโs important role as our primary evacuation centre in times of emergency.
Sports groups will continue to have access to the Centre by agreement with council, and holiday programs will be run when there are organisations to provide them.
The end of this tenancy will not impact the PCYCโs work with our local schools.
Council is aware of the need for a youth service, and has approached 22 different service providers including PCYC to seek expressions of interest to deliver this important work in a space that is not the Sport Centre. The Centreโs primary function will now be to provide space for sports and well-being, and to house Derwent Valley residents during emergencies.
On behalf of Derwent Valley Council I would like to thank the staff of PCYC for their work and dedication.
