Brassknocker fire trail Fire CONTAINED

The Brassknocker fire has been moved to contained status this morning. Crews attempted to access the site today, however conditions remain very wet and ground access is still limited.

We will continue to monitor the area over the coming days using both vehicle patrols and aircraft, and will provide further information as soon as it is safe for firefighters to access the fireground.

There is no threat to the community, and firefighter safety remains our priority. Thank you for your continued patience and support.

Storms on the afternoon of the 8th of January resulted in a number of lightning strikes, generally south and west of Timbillica. Crews successfully identified and contained two smaller fires, and further reports are being investigated this morning.

There are no reports of any threat to property at this stage, and we are working to ensure that all fires are kept as small as possible in these challenging conditions.

Smoke haze from fires further to our west is making it difficult to locate any new fires and there will be more information to follow as we get a clearer picture of the situation.

Today, 31 March, marks the end of the statutory Bush Fire Danger Period (BFDP) for the majority of NSW. However, due to the ongoing fire risk, the BFDP will be extended in 11 Local Government Areas, including parts of the Central Tablelands and north-west regions.

While many landholders may no longer require a fire permit, you are still required to notify the RFS and your neighbours of your intention to burn at least 24 hours before lighting the fire.

For more information on the bush fire danger period and fire permits, visit the website: www.rfs.nsw.gov.au/BFDP

Prepare for Bush Fire Season with These Essential Steps

With much-needed rain gracing the Far South Coast, now is the perfect time to take proactive steps to protect your home and loved ones from potential bush fires. The NSW Rural Fire Service recommends the following key actions:

overhanging trees and shrubs: Prevent fires from spreading to your home.
grass and remove cuttings: A cleared area around your home ensures a safer working space for firefighters.
flammable materials near your home: Remove items like door mats, wood piles, mulch, leaves, and outdoor furniture that can ignite.
gutters of debris and leaves: Burning embers can spark fires in your home.
a sturdy hose: Ensure it reaches all around your home, with access to a reliable water source such as a pool, tank, or dam.

For more detailed advice and resources, visit the NSW Rural Fire Service website - https://www.rfs.nsw.gov.au/

Stay vigilant, stay prepared, and stay safe this bush fire season.

Nethercote RFS had the privilege of supporting Santa on Saturday afternoon. The big fella gave his reindeer a rest and got a ride in the truck on his way to visit all the kids at the hall Christmas party. He was very impressed with the turn out and everyone's impeccable manners. Our community keeps growing and going from strength to strength. How good is this next generation of Nethercotians!?

Mulching plays a key role in bushfire mitigation by providing several important benefits:

Moisture Retention: Mulch helps retain moisture in the soil, which can prevent vegetation from becoming dry and more susceptible to ignition during a fire. By keeping plants healthier and more hydrated, they are less likely to catch fire.

W**d Control: Mulch suppresses w**d growth by blocking sunlight, which reduces the amount of dry, flammable plant matter. W**ds can often be highly combustible, so keeping them under control lowers fire risk.

Soil Insulation: Mulch acts as a protective layer over the soil, helping to regulate temperature fluctuations. This prevents soil from drying out, which can cause plants to become more fire-prone.

Reduced Surface Fuels: A well-maintained mulch layer can help minimize the amount of dry, loose debris on the ground. This reduces the fuel load that can contribute to the spread of fire.
