Thank you to the Pilbara Ports Small Grants Program and Rio Tinto Community Giving Program for supporting LOV with funds that enabled the purchase of an Autorefractor for use in our Roebourne visiting optometry clinic. The large bottle neck at many remote sites is the inability to fund, or have funded, a fully kitted out optometric service delivery room. To provide efficient and streamlined clinical delivery, we rely on handheld equipment to allow for quicker assessment. In Roebourne we now run fortnightly optometry clinics, the most we have ever run and over the next 3 years we hope to be able to assess over 300 patients.
Thank you, and for your support.

Janet Richardson works as an Aboriginal Liaison Officer at Lions Outback Vision in Broome and recently gave the Jilpia Nappaljari Jones Memorial Oration, celebrating Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women in eye care at the 10th National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Eye Health Conference, recently held in Melbourne.
In 1978, when BRAMS was established, Janet worked as a Nurse/Receptionist, where she had the chance to meet Professor Fred Hollows and his team. She had the privilege of travelling with him to show him the Peninsula Region of the Kimberley and outstations at Roebuck Plains. It was the Professor who inspired her to take up Eye Health.
We love listening to Aunty Janet’s stories and hearing of her rich history and experiences as well as learning from her wisdom and watching her kindness to our patients. We thought we would Janet's story with you.
Thank you to and Aunty Janet for the beautiful video and allowing us to share it.

During the Pilbara Challenge in 2023 and 2024, we road tested several AI tools that could identify diabetic retinopathy in patient images as soon as they were taken.
The advanced AI diagnostic tool, known as ARDA, was developed by Google Health and was the most accurate, with the technology now handed over to our Ninox Vision team, vested in providing AI supported cameras to GPs and Primary Health providers across Australia.
Hear what Angus Turner has to say about the system and its validation in these informative one, five or 10 minute videos.

Dr Angus Turner shows the solutions Google AI is enabling in his vital work to improve screening for eye disease.

It's a little bit late to wish everyone a happy New Year🙃but we are back with our new team and loving every minute of it. Don't believe us - look at those smiles as Maheshi, Gifar and Aditi got off the plane for this week's Kalgoorlie outreach trip (and that was after an early morning start and delayed departure). LOV your work ladies.

It has been another fabulous year for Team LOV. We thank all those who recognised our team contribution with various awards and the lovely feedback we have received from patients and collaborators across the year.
We said farewell to Drs Yachana and Vaibhav Shah from our Broome team after 7 years of amazing contribution and welcomed a whole new team of doctors who have been busy working away in our clinics, in the hospitals and on the Vision Van.
As always, our faithful admin and coordination team have been beavering away in the background, making an untold number of phone calls and appointment bookings, answering queries, booking travel for our doctors and optometrists and responding to queries.
We have had the pleasure of working with other health professional across the breadth of the state, all with the same aim of getting the best outcomes for our patients.
We have had several research papers published again this year, with the exciting research by Dr Donald Tran that showed our NW Hub has brought eye health service in the Kimberley to an equivalent level of that in the metropolitan area. That is an incredible achievement over 5 years, and we thank everyone who has worked with us to achieve that outcome.
Everyone from team LOV would like to extend our best wishes to you all for the festive season. We hope you enjoy your time over the break and take time to rest and recharge.
Our team will be back on 5th January ready to do it all again. Stay safe and enjoy!

Research that shows we are making a difference. Nice job team.

A big thank you to all our supporters who believed in the possibilities and helped make it happen.

Since establishing the permanent Kimberley Hub in Broome in 2020, Lions Outback Vision has strengthened access to high-quality eye care for communities across the region!

Highlights from a newly published audit include:

👁 Cataract surgery rates for Aboriginal peoples in the Kimberley are now 6 times the Australian average, achieving equity of access

🌇 The remote region now has the same rate of surgery as the city

☎️ Telehealth services helped halve the waiting times for surgery in the region

All of this has contributed to improved vision outcomes in the previously underserved Kimberley region!

Today we say a sad farewell to Dr Vaibhav Shah who is returning to Perth to take up new opportunities with his family. Vaibhav first joined LOV in 2019 as a Fellow on the Vision Van and then became a founding member of the Broome team, first working out of our temporary Napier Terrace clinic, and then seeing our first patient in our new clinic in 2021. Over 7 years Vaibhav has made an invaluable contribution to the growth of LOV as well as to patient service, through some challenging times and some milestone moments. Vaibhav brought retinal surgery to the Kimberley for the first time, allowing 158 patients to be treated in Broome who would normally have had to fly to Perth. His contribution goes beyond that, as I am sure all of the patients who have become well acquainted with Dr V know. V you have been a great colleague, friend, mentor, teacher and, along with Dr Yachana, you took a huge leap of faith with Dr Turner to become a trail blazer for eye health in the North West. We thank you for all you have brought to team LOV, wish you well and we will miss you!
