Oceans Week in the BFF Club 🌊

Our little explorers dove into the deep blue as brought the ocean to us, complete with shark jaws, shells, sea treasures, and the star of the show… a real live starfish.

We learned about the incredible animals that call our oceans home and how we can help keep their habitats clean.

💙 May Volunteer of the Month: Rod!

Rod is the kind of person who will jump into any task without hesitation, whether it’s helping families, supporting fellow volunteers, or even laying artificial turf at the hospital. No matter what’s needed, Rod is always ready to lend a hand with enthusiasm and care.

Over the past six years, Rod has become a familiar and valued presence across our programs from Green Team and Family Ambassador to Activity Agent and EDHeads, always stepping in wherever support is needed most. Families and volunteers alike know Rod for his warm smile, positive attitude and genuine kindness. You’ll often spot him stopping to say hello to a child, playing games, shooting some hoops, or simply taking a moment to brighten someone’s day.

Rod is amazing supporting last minute roster gaps, he comes to Fun on Four and slips into the sessions as though he’s been part of the team forever. He always arrives with a big smile and makes a point of connecting with the children and families, helping everyone feel welcome and comfortable. His natural ability to engage with others and bring positive energy to every interaction makes him an incredible asset to the Blue Army.

Rod gives 110% to every shift and every task, and his selfless nature makes a lasting impact on our spaces and the people within them. Thank you, Rod, for everything you do!

🌿 Bringing Whadjuk Noongar boodja to our front garden 🌿

Our front garden is growing into something truly special, a living connection to Whadjuk Noongar boodja, including beautiful local plants that carry deep cultural meaning and have supported Whadjuk Noongar people for thousands of years.

✨ Boolkaala (Banksia menziesii)
A beloved source of sweet nectar and a favourite for local birds. Its flowers bring colour, life, and stories of Country.

✨ Yongka Maar (Kangaroo Paw)
An iconic WA plant with deep roots in Whadjuk Noongar culture. Traditionally used for food and natural dyes, today it still stands tall as a symbol of resilience and beauty.

✨ Kwoor (Woolly Bush)
Soft, silvery and full of texture, once used for bedding and in smoking practices, now offering shelter to small birds and adding calm to our space.

Thanks to Bunnings Claremont these plants don’t just brighten our garden, they help us stay connected to the land we live on, honouring the knowledge, care and culture of the Whadjuk Noongar people.

🌳 Community corner 🌳

Last month our community MAY-de such an impact through generously supporting families in our care.

Many thanks to the boarders at Scotch College Perth Christ Church Grammar School St Hilda's Anglican School for Girls PLC and MLC for decorating about 40 cakes just in time to be delivered to the House on Mother’s Day.

The students at the Rossmoyne Senior High School Interact Club kindly made Mother’s Day gift packs that include thoughtful items for the mums staying with us over Mother's Day. Such a considerate donation that was gratefully appreciated by our mums.

Thanks to the students at Providence Christian College who recently held a free-dress day and sausage sizzle raising an incredible $2180.33 for Ronald McDonald House WA.

On Thursday 7 May, members of the Interior Fitout Association came together for their annual golf day. A well planned and run event, enjoyed by all and thanks to the fundraising efforts on the day, $4072.07 was raised to support Ronald McDonald House WA.

Special thanks to those who walked or ran in the HBF Run for a Reason and fundraised an incredible $14,508.64 for Ronald McDonald House WA.

😎 Best friends forever 😎

Today, we celebrate National Best Friends Day!

Our Director of Hugs and Pats Gus, wears many hats, but his most prized is being the bestest friend families, staff and volunteers could ever ask for.

Here's to you Gus, and the heart and hugs you bring to us all.

The Bass Family Foundation Learning Centre was buzzing last week as kids met real‑life astronaut and 2026 Australian of the Year, Katherine Bennell‑Pegg 🚀✨

From space bingo to big, curious questions like how do astronauts sleep? What’s the scariest part? How high can they jump?

They even built their own straw rockets, wrapping up the session with a joyful blast‑off countdown.

Katherine’s visit left the group inspired, energised and dreaming big.

🏠 Our home away from home 🏠

“It’s a place the kids get excited about. On the drive up, they guess who the Family Liaison Officer is for the day, or whether or not Gus will be there.

They just race in and see what the layout of the room is like, and then off they trot to play pretty much as quickly as they can in the rec room or playroom.

For Henry and me, though, it’s a place where you don’t have to pretend. Even though you’re not walking the same path or dealing with the same diagnosis, you are absolutely understood by all the people there.

Honestly, it truly has become a home away from home.” Mum Stephanie explains.

Help families like Stephanie's stay together and access the comfort and care they need far from home by donating today https://bit.ly/3PgYyfq

🌻Together for parents🌻

Parenting is a journey filled with love, challenges and endless learning. Today, we celebrate and acknowledge the incredible role of parents and carers.

Behind every child facing illness or injury stands a parent or carer whose love becomes part of their healing.

We understand how vital family is in these moments, and we’re here to keep families together and support their wellbeing when they need it most
