Throwback Thursday ⚡
Christening of the Joan Gill, 1960.
Southy's new surfboat being christened in 1960, following a generous donation from Warringah Shire Council. The boat had originally been allocated to Collaroy Surf Club, who passed it on to Southy after recognising that our club was in need of a new boat.
The boat was named after Joan Gill, who had already given many years of service and support to Southy at a time when women were not eligible for full membership or active patrol duties.
Joan was married to Life Member Bert Gill, daughter of longtime club treasurer Harry Turner and sister of Ian Turner, a noted competitor for Southy.
