Great Walk Network

Great Walk Network www.greatwalknetwork.org The Great Walk started as a protest walk from Denmark (WA) to Perth to raise awareness about the logging in old Growth Forests.

It was also a Bi Centenary Celebration to appreciate our environment. People on that walk enjoyed it so much that since then different individuals in the Great Walk have organised walks a few times a year. Most walks still are organised with an awareness raising focus about the land we walk and the way we live. The Great Walk is a non-profit voluntary organisation

Photos from the last busy bee at the tribal grounds from last Thursday to Sunday morning. We shuffled the dates a bit due to the forecasted weather warning and were blessed with blue skies during the day and light drizzle at night. We had several small fires and two bigger ones getting rid of some of the fuel build up. Thanks to all who made this happen: Susan H. and her sister Caroline, Sue C., Ursula, Zane and Charlie, and Ian who rocked up with chainsaws and a firefighting unit.

It's a special time at the tribal grounds at the moment. The grass is green, fungi of all varieties are popping up everywhere, blackberries and thistles and are thriving.

Hut kitchen: please take all food back home and clean up after yourself. We have a massive mice and rats problem.

New toilet: please make yourself familiar with the new composting toilet. There's a diagram on the wall in the toilet hut.

Firewood storage: DO NOT STORE UNDER THE HUT - ATTRACTS TERMITES

Wood, wood, wood: while we use burn offs to reduce the fuel load we primarily have from the pines at the tribal grounds we would much more prefer to put it to good use. On your next visit, bring a ute or trailer and take some home. If you know anyone in Nannup who needs free wood let them know. There are piles at the back of the property.

Hi All

We're planning a Busy Bee at the Tribal Grounds for the long weekend, Friday 29 May to Monday 1 June.

There's a lot of debris and dead wood all over the grounds that needs burning. So the idea is to have several small fires.

At the back of the property, the pine forest needs cleaning up. There are heaps of logs that were felled and not cut. It would be appreciated if someone who can safely operate a chainsaw could bring one along.

Other jobs include weeding, cleaning gutters, and minor repairs such as leaks on the roof and around the flue of the fireplace.

We have limited tools; therefore, it would be great if you brought your own gardening tools, such as hoes, shears, rakes, and drills.

As per usual, bring food to share or prepare a meal. We can decide on the day if we will cook together. There's a gas ring in the hut.

If you want, bring an instrument, a song, a dance or a story to share.

I look forward to seeing you there.

Regards
Ursula

The white-flowering Marri (Corymbia calophylla) is a keystone species in southwest Western Australia, where it provides pollen and nectar for native bees and other wildlife at a time when few other species are flowering. The fruit (gumnuts) and seeds of this species are staples in the diet of the Critically Endangered Baudin’s Cockatoo, the Endangered Carnaby’s Cockatoo, and the Vulnerable Red-tailed Black Cockatoo. Older Marri Gum’s bear wide and deep hollows for these large species to nest in.

Tribal grounds during the Nannup Music Festival. A small group of great walkers dared to camp amongst the march flies. Robert and Ursula planted sedges along the dam. Fiona and Charlie tackled the weeds.

The new toilet is operational. Yeah! Oum to Chris. Celebrate Chris. Sing him with an open and a joyful heart....

Please read the instructions carefully before (or during) use to keep the toilet happy. 😃

We got a bigger fire place. Another Oum for Chris!!

Ursula received Chris, Ian and the new toilet hut at its destination the tribal grounds. We had two busy hardworking days. The new toilet hut found a location. Ian did the fire break which hadn't been done for years, and the spillway was refined. Lots of buckets of water and rubble were carried for the latter.
It was a pleasure watching these guys work to precision. Chris didn't stop until the hut was in the most perfect position and Ian skilfully manoeuvred the tractor with minimal impact on the environment. I told him he must not damage the newly planted reeds at the dam and he somehow managed not to touch them!
