Have you ever thought about giving back to your local community?

The NSW Rural Fire Service Lower North Coast District is looking for new volunteers to join our brigades across the Kempsey and Nambucca Valley local government areas.

Our members come from all walks of life and volunteer for many different reasons. Whether you're a tradesperson, office worker, student, retiree, business owner, or anything in between, there is a place for you in the RFS.

Being a volunteer is about much more than fighting bush fires. Our members respond to a wide variety of incidents, including:
πŸ”₯ Vegetation fires
πŸš— Motor vehicle accidents
πŸš™ Vehicle fires
🏠 House fires
🀝 Supporting other emergency services, including the SES
πŸ‘¨β€πŸ« Community engagement and education activities

No experience? No problem.

We provide flexible training and ongoing support to help you develop the skills and confidence needed to contribute safely and effectively. There are also many non-operational roles available, meaning there is an opportunity for everyone to get involved.

If you're looking to make a difference, learn new skills, meet great people, and help protect your local community, we'd love to hear from you.

Last night was the darkest night ever experienced by Marine Rescue NSW.

Marine Rescue NSW volunteers answer the call for help 24/7 and last night six members from Marine Rescue Ballina did just that. They launched with a single mission, to save lives on the water and assist a yacht, reported to be in difficulty off the South Ballina break wall.

Tragically, two of our volunteers lost their lives during the response.

Marine Rescue NSW Commissioner Todd Andrews said the devastating loss is a solemn reminder of the risks faced by volunteers who serve their communities.

β€œThese two men were serving their local community and have made the ultimate sacrifice to help others.

β€œOur thoughts and deepest condolences are with the families and loved ones of the deceased, their fellow crew members, the brave radio operators who handled the difficult communications during the incident, the entire Marine Rescue NSW family and the wider Ballina community during this incredibly difficult time.

β€œWe are supporting our volunteers and their families through professional counselling and chaplaincy support.

β€œWe ask that the privacy of those involved and their families be respected during this difficult time,” Commissioner Andrews said.

Communications is an essential part of our Operational Support capability in the district, which provides operational communications and dispatch locally during extended incidents and heightened operations periods.

This involves communications members establishing a comms cell at the Fire Control Centre, and taking the local radio channel back from the OCC (HQ).

This is a great opportunity for new members looking for a support role within the RFS who may not wish to be operational firefighters, or those members who may be looking to transition away from firefighting into a support role.

LNC Support Captain Cher deRossiter is keen to chat to anyone who may be interested and asks any interested members, or prospective members to submit an inquiry via the below form, and she will be in contact.
