🌿 Protect the Sunshine Coast We Love 🌿

From the Glass House Mountains to our forests, wetlands, beaches, waterways and wildlife habitats, the Sunshine Coast is home to some of Australia's most remarkable natural places.

But these places cannot protect themselves.

For more than 45 years, Sunshine Coast Environment Council has been the region's independent voice for nature β€” bringing communities together, advocating for stronger environmental protections, reviewing major development proposals and policies,, and standing up for the landscapes, waterways and wildlife that make this region so special.

As our region continues to grow, the need for strong, evidence-based environmental advocacy has never been greater.

Every successful campaign, every protected habitat, every community action project and every voice raised for nature is only possible because people choose to support this work.

🌿 Protecting wildlife habitat
🌊 Defending rivers, wetlands and waterways
πŸ¦‰ Supporting native plants and animals
🌳 Advocating for forests, wallum country and green spaces
πŸ“’ Providing a strong, independent voice for nature

As we approach the end of the financial year, we're asking our community to stand with us.

If you value the Sunshine Coast's natural environment, please consider making a tax-deductible donation before 30 June.

The Sunshine Coast we love today exists because people cared enough to protect it.

Now it's our turn.

πŸ‹πŸŒŠ Join us in welcoming the whales to Noosa. πŸŒŠπŸ‹

As humpback whales begin their annual migration along Australia's east coast, the Ocean and Whale Honouring Ceremony offers an opportunity to pause, reflect and reconnect with the natural rhythms of the ocean.

This special community gathering celebrates the return of these magnificent marine visitors and recognises the deep connection between healthy oceans, thriving wildlife and resilient communities.

The ceremony will include:
πŸ‹ Welcome to Country
🎨 Whale Sand Sculpture
🌊 Reflection on Our Connection to the Ocean

These gatherings bring together environmental awareness, cultural traditions and community connection to honour one of nature's most remarkable migrations and wish the whales safe passage on their journey.

🦜🐭 Discover two of the Sunshine Coast's most fascinating and vulnerable native species. 🐭🦜

Join the Noosa Parks Association's Friday Environment Forum for a presentation by field ecologist Kieran Aland (Wildwise Environmental Services) exploring the latest research on the Eastern Ground Parrot and the Water Mouse.

Once widespread along Australia's eastern coastline, mainland populations of the Eastern Ground Parrot are now restricted to isolated heathland remnants, including areas of the Sunshine Coast, Cooloola and K'gari.

Kieran will discuss the current status of these beautiful birds and the challenges they face in a changing landscape.

The forum will also explore the remarkable Water Mouse β€” a tiny and highly specialised native rodent found in only a handful of locations across Australia.

Dependent on healthy mangrove ecosystems, this rare species is an important indicator of coastal ecosystem health.

🌿 What a wonderful way to launch WEDFest 2026. 🌿

On Friday night, community and environment groups, volunteers, researchers, and local advocates came together to celebrate the launch of this year's World Environment Day Festival.

The highlights of the evening included listening to community advocates working to protect our Sunshine Coast, each one reminding us that caring for nature often starts with people coming together to take action for the future they want to see.

For more than 45 years, WEDFest has brought people together around environmental action on the Sunshine Coast β€” and this year is no different.

A huge thank you to everyone who attended, volunteered, presented, organised and helped create such a welcoming and inspiring evening.

πŸ’š Community.
🌿 Connection.
🌏 Action.

See you throughout June as WEDFest 2026 continues across the Sunshine Coast. Check out the Program here.

πŸŒŠπŸ’™ WORLD OCEAN DAY πŸ’™πŸŒŠ

Today we celebrate the ocean that connects us all.

The ocean produces around half the oxygen we breathe, regulates our climate, stores carbon, supports extraordinary biodiversity, and sustains life on Earth. 🌏

Here on the Sunshine Coast, healthy oceans support a rich network of coastal and marine ecosystems, from estuaries, dunes and seagrass meadows to offshore reefs and the wildlife that depends on them. πŸ’πŸ¬πŸŸπŸ¦€

World Ocean Day is an opportunity to reflect on the challenges facing our oceans, including:

🌑️ Climate change and ocean warming
πŸͺΈ Habitat degradation and biodiversity loss
πŸ’§ Water pollution and declining water quality
πŸ—‘οΈ Plastic pollution and marine debris
🌊 Pressures on coastal and marine ecosystems

Healthy oceans are essential for healthy communities, healthy wildlife populations, and a healthy planet.

They help regulate our climate, support marine food webs, protect coastlines, and sustain species including turtles, dolphins, migratory shorebirds and humpback whales.

It is also a reminder that positive action matters.

Whether it's reducing waste, protecting waterways, restoring habitat, participating in citizen science, supporting conservation efforts, or advocating for stronger environmental protections, we all have a role to play in caring for our blue planet. πŸ’™

The future of our ocean depends on the choices we make today.

🌿 INTRODUCING: Sunny Coast Nature Collective 🌿

A new community storytelling project by Sunshine Coast Environment Council.

Launching on World Environment Day as part of WEDFEST 2026, Sunny Coast Nature Collective celebrates the people, places, and everyday connections that make the Sunshine Coast so special.

We know there are so many people across the Sunshine Coast who deeply care about nature, wildlife, waterways, forests, beaches, climate, community, and protecting the places & lifestyle we love.

So we wanted to create a space that celebrates that connection.

Sunny Coast Nature Collective is all about amplifying local voices and sharing the many ways people connect with the environment around them β€” from surfers, photographers, hikers, and wildlife lovers to artists, conservation volunteers, students, ocean advocates, and everyday locals who simply love this place.

πŸ“² We’re inviting Sunshine Coast locals to create a short vertical video or reel (30 - 45 secs) sharing:

🌿 who you are
πŸ“ your favourite nature spot
πŸ’š how connecting with nature benefits you
🌏 why protecting the Coast matters to you

Whether it’s sunrise beach walks, wildlife encounters, planting days, ocean adventures, hinterland hikes, sustainability projects, or simply your favourite local place in nature β€” we want to see your world 🌿

HOW TO JOIN:
βœ” Post your reel on Instagram or TikTok
βœ” Tag Sunshine Coast Environment Council
βœ” Use

Selected videos may be featured across SCEC social media throughout June πŸ“²

Together, we can help inspire a stronger, greener, and more connected Sunshine Coast community πŸ’š
