Itโ€™s difficult to tell whoโ€™s who when sisters Rachael Hilder and Ellie Oates jump on the phone with Graziher. Their voices blend seamlessly and they have a habit of finishing each otherโ€™s sentences. Theyโ€™re not twins โ€” Rachael is the eldest and they have a brother, Michael, between them โ€” but their bond clearly runs deep. โ€œSometimes itโ€™s just a look Rachael and I give each other,โ€ says Ellie. โ€œWe can communicate on our own weird level.โ€

The ability to speak volumes with a single glance is a serious advantage when youโ€™re running a business together, and even more so when that business is a 16,000 hectare sheep property. The sisters are the fourth generation of Hilders to farm Acacia Valley, near Cradock in the Flinders Ranges, about 400 kilometres north of Adelaide. Itโ€™s a role theyโ€™ve been preparing for all their lives. โ€œGrowing up, we were involved with pretty much anything going on at home, and I think that helped us learn to work together as well as we do these days,โ€ says Rachael.

Analysis from The Forgotten Health Spend report reveals that since 2020โ€“21, the per-person gap in healthcare funding between rural and metropolitan Australians has grown by $110 in real terms.

This means that people living outside our cities - the seven million Australians in rural, regional, and remote communities - are falling even further behind when it comes to access to equitable healthcare.

The findings highlight that despite targeted investments in some areas, rural health funding continues to lag - particularly in hospital care, primary care, allied health, and dentistry.

The message is clear: Australia needs a more equitable, needs-based model of healthcare funding - one that recognises the unique realities of delivering care beyond the city limits.
