Stewarts River Catchment Group kicked off their activities again recently with a wonderful Meet + Greet and Propagation event in Johns River on Saturday 13 June 🌿😊

The day was filled with great conversations with local Landcarers about the group’s future direction, with plenty of inspiring ideas shared — from tackling riverbank erosion to planning group excursions to wild and wonderful places 🌱✨

We also explored a range of common rainforest plants and their key identifying features before heading out on a river walk to look for native fruiting trees to propagate. It was a fantastic day of learning, inspiration and connection, and has sparked plenty of motivation for more regular Landcare events in the future 💚

🐨 Join us in Wootton for a special Koala Habitat morning! 🌿

We’d love you to join us on Monday 22 June, 9.30am–1pm as we come together to form a Koala Habitat Community of Practice through MidCoast Council’s Koala Safe Spaces Program 💚

You don’t need to have taken part in the program before — anyone with an interest in protecting and enhancing koala habitat is warmly welcome 😊

Koalas are a true umbrella species 🐨✨ — when we care for koala habitat, we’re also helping create healthy, diverse and resilient ecosystems for so many other native species too 🌱🦋🐦

We’ll enjoy a walk-and-talk around a local property that is home to koalas. Once heavily disturbed by historical logging and overrun with lantana and other w**ds, the site is now on a much healthier path thanks to passionate landholders and contractors working together 🙌

On the day, we’ll chat about:
🌿 bush regeneration strategies
🌿 follow-up restoration work
🌿 w**d management techniques
🌿 native vine management

And if you’re feeling inspired, you’ll be invited to join in a little w**d work along the way 👩‍🌾🌱

☀️ 🌱 We had a great day out in the sun planting native trees with our newly forming Taree Landcare group on Friday 12 June at our William Wynter Park site. 🙌

Four young and enthusiastic volunteers joined us alongside Aus Eco Solutions , where we removed w**ds and planted around 100 trees and native grasses to help boost native habitat and biodiversity in our local park 🌿🐦

Join local Hunter Local Land Services staff Peter Beale and Hannah Botta from the Manning Great Lakes region for a practical workshop exploring how to improve soil health and productivity on your property. 🌿🐮🪱💦

What to expect:

This session will cover:
Soil acidity - is there a new way forward?
Soil Testing - when, where, and how to test?
Understanding spatial distribution - why one test isn’t always enough
Prilled vs bulk lime - what works best where?
Potassium - the often-forgotten nutrient
Clover - why it matters for productive pastures.

🌳Eucalyptus glaucina, commonly known as the Slaty Red Gum, is a threatened species found in parts of the Mid
Coast region of NSW, particularly on fertile alluvial flats and lower slopes.

Tree: grows up to 20m

Bark: smooth, white and grey with patches of pink, orange or green; sometimes becoming granular or powdery with age.

Leaves: bluish-grey (glaucous) leaves

Similar to other red gum E. tereticornis and E. amplifolia, the main differences are more robust, glaucous buds and fruit, and most notably the square stem (at cross section) at juvenile stage.

🙏Thanks to Caitlin Orr from the Mid Coast Council Koala Project Team for pointing out this interesting threatened species at a recent Eucalypt ID event! Like many native local trees they provide important habitat and food resources for native wildlife, including koalas and woodland birds.
