🌏💚 Happy World Environment Day from Mid Coast 2 Tops Landcare!

World Environment Day is the United Nations’ global day for encouraging awareness and action to protect our environment, celebrated each year on 5 June.
In 2026, the theme is climate action—shining a light on the signals our planet is sending and the actions we can all take in response. 🔥💦🌿💪

Learn more at worldenvironmentday.global and worldenvironmentday.global/2026/about/theme-and-host.

Every tree planted, every habitat restored, and every pair of hands doing good work in the field helps grow a healthier, happier future for our region. 🌱

✨ Want to be part of it? Come along to one of our upcoming events and connect with others who care for our landscapes: midcoast2tops.org.au/events.

Beautiful natives to grow in the garden 🌸

🪴Agapanthus are pretty and popular, but many home gardeners are surprised by how easily they can spread into bushland and become serious weeds.

Many older varieties self-seed and form dense clumps, gradually overtaking smaller native shrubs and ground-covers, crowding out native plants and contributing to bushfire conditions.

Luckily, there are stunning native alternatives that still deliver on colour, shape and toughness - while supporting bees, birds and biodiversity.

Try these natives instead:
🌱Blue flax lily (Dianella caerulea)
🌱Nodding blue lily (Stypandra glauca)
🌱Swamp lily (Crinum pedunculatum)
🌱Bulbine lily (Bulbine bulbosa)
🌱Austral indigo (Indigofera australis)
🌱Lord Howe Island wedding lily (Dietes robinsoniana)

Spread the word to your fellow gardeners! 👩‍🌾🪏💧

This looks like an interesting event with Nature NSW 🌿

Voices for Nature Film Screening & CEO Update
You're invited to a special online premiere of our new short documentary, Voices for Nature.

Voices for Nature explores the story of Nature Conservation Council NSW. From bushwalking clubs to urban residents to unions to activists, the environment movement in NSW has always been marked by small groups of people who dedicate their energy to creating change. When NCC came on the scene, our role was to channel the efforts of people all over NSW into lasting change for the entire state.

Over the past seven decades, since NCC’s founding in 1955, nature lovers have stood up when the places they loved were on the line. Still, nature and our fragile climate are under attack now more than ever — and this film documents what we need to scale up. It's a celebration of the many instances of collective action that have caused ripples that will flow on for generations.

It is a powerful call to action that, even though the challenges are vast and overwhelming, we all have a choice to act and to turn things around.

Date & time: Wednesday 3rd June, 6-7pm
Where: Online (Zoom — RSVP to receive the link)

The film screening will be followed by an update on NCC's work from CEO Jacqui Mumford, followed by a Q&A.

As part of Hunter Region Landcare Network's recognition and respect of the knowledge and traditions of First Nations people and their continued practices of Caring for Country, and our desire to have inclusive Landcaring practices that reach across cultures for the benefit of the land and waterways, we have applied for and been successful in our application with MidCoast2Tops Landcare Connection for an Aboriginal Partnerships program grant under the Landcare Enabling Program.

More information is coming on exciting programs and opportunities to connect and share our journeys of Caring for Country together across the Hunter Region. These programs will not be a "one off fix" but a chance to explore deeper, lasting ways we can collaborate to heal and repair more Country for everyone's benefit.

We support this year's National Reconciliation Week theme "All in", a call to listen, learn and act in ways that honour the world's oldest continuing cultures. By bearing witness to challenging truths and building trust through respect and acts of kindness, we can contribute to healing past and continuing wounds in our local communities, creating positive, equitable futures for all, alongside healthy Country. Landcare is for everyone.
