Today is the Great ShakeOut, a global drill held every year, to educate the community on earthquake safety.

As the control agency for earthquake, we want every Victorian to know the three
important steps to stay safe during an earthquake: DROP, COVER, and HOLD ON!

Even though high magnitude earthquakes are rare in Victoria, they do happen and you could experience one while travelling overseas.

Today marks the International Day of DisasterRisk Reduction, and this year’s theme is ‘resilience starts at home’.

We know that understanding how to prepare your home for emergencies is key to keeping yourself and your loved ones safe. Things like keeping your gutters clean and trimming your trees can go a long way in preparing you for a storm or flood.

🚨 Thunderstorms and rain are forecast across much of Victoria from tomorrow through to the weekend, so now is the time to prepare. Ensure to:

✅ Secure loose outdoor furniture and other items
✅ Park vehicles undercover and away from trees
✅ Never drive, ride or walk through floodwater

🏕️ If you're camping these school holidays, choose your campsite carefully and have a plan if conditions change. Remember to:

▶ Camp away from trees and overhanging branches
▶ Set up on higher ground, away from creeks, rivers and streams
▶ Know your camping ground's emergency plan
▶ Set a watch zone for your campsite in the VicEmergency app

If you’re going camping this school holidays, think about the conditions when you set up and plan for what you’ll do if a storm or flood happens.

Our tips:
🌌 Set up your camping site under a clear sky away from trees and branches.
⛰️ Camp on higher ground away from creeks, rivers, streams and other waterways.
📋 Find out what your camping ground’s emergency plan is.
📱 Set a watch zone which includes your camp site on the VicEmergency app, so you are alerted to relevant warnings.

For our members, connection and looking out for one another is particularly important.

That’s why we’re having conversations and reflecting on the importance of checking in on each other.

Whether we’re out in the field, working alongside other in our offices, delivering
training or taking on the role of Peer Support Officer, there are many opportunities for us to notice when someone might not be themselves and start a conversation.
