Last week, Melville SES was proud to present local business Rack Spares with a plaque and Certificate of Appreciation in recognition of their generous support and contribution to our unit.

Rack Spares have kindly donated pallet racking and shelving to help keep our equipment organised, ensuring we’re better prepared for callouts and training.

Thank you, Rack Spares — your support makes a real difference to our volunteers and our community. A special thank you also to Wayne, who made time to visit our unit and accept the award on behalf of Rack Spares.

Last week, Melville SES volunteers visited the DFES State Operations Centre

We were given a behind-the-scenes look at how call-outs are managed and prioritised, and how the teams there prepare for incoming incidents. It was a valuable opportunity to better understand the vital work that supports emergency services crews across the state.

On Saturday evening, volunteers from Melville SES joined members from other SES units to assist in the search for a missing camper in Ashendon.

We’re pleased to share that the camper was located safe and well.

Safety is at the forefront of everything we do.

On Sunday, almost 30 of our volunteers were literally hanging around at Booragoon Primary School, taking part in Ladder and Roof Safety Systems training. The day refreshed essential working-at-heights skills, introduced new equipment, and included simulated roof falls and self-rescue techniques.

A big thank you to Booragoon Primary School for generously allowing us to use its facilities, and to the trainers who organised and ran such a great day.

🚨⚠️ A reminder for today's AusAlert taking place at 12:00 🚨⚠️

Just about every mobile phone in Australia... and some smart watches and tablets too - will vibrate, play a loud siren-like sound and display an AusAlert critical alert for roughly 10 seconds on Monday 27 July 2026 at 12 noon AWST.

If receiving an AusAlert test will cause you or a family member to feel unsafe, turn off your devices or switch them to aeroplane mode before the test time and leave them off for at least one hour.

Just about every mobile phone in Australia...

And some smart watches and tablets too - will vibrate, play a loud siren-like sound and display an AusAlert critical alert for roughly 10 seconds on Monday 27 July 2026 at 12 noon AWST.

In the future, AusAlert may be used for a range of emergencies, including bushfires, serious public safety incidents, animal or plant diseases and pandemics.

This alert is not sent through the Emergency WA app or any other emergency services app. AusAlert is a new federal government initiative that forms part of Australia's nationally operated emergency alert system, designed to deliver warnings during serious emergencies.

Recently, after 10 years of dedicated service, we said farewell to one of Melville’s long-standing and respected members, Di Turner.

As our Administration Officer, Di has worked tirelessly behind the scenes to keep the unit running smoothly and in outstanding order. Her commitment, professionalism, warmth and friendly nature have made a lasting impact on our members and the wider unit.

While we'll miss seeing Di around the unit, we're incredibly grateful for everything she has contributed over the past decade. On behalf of Melville SES, thank you for your dedication, service and support to both the Unit and our community.

We wish you all the very best for the next chapter, Di. You will always be part of the Melville SES family. 🧡

🐾 Special visitors at this week’s training! 🐾

This week, we had the pleasure of welcoming one of the WA SES Canine teams to our training night – Cheryl (handler), Liam (navigator), and we’re sure we don’t need to tell you which one Remi is! 🐶

SES Canine teams play a vital role in the search for missing persons, and we were fortunate to take part in one of their training exercises and see first-hand the incredible techniques they use during searches.

With a brand-new environment to work in, several of our members volunteered to play an enthusiastic game of hide-and-seek around the unit. Despite our best efforts, Remi proved once again why he’s the professional, expertly sniffing out every hidden volunteer.

The dedication of our Canine teams is remarkable. For them, every day is a training day, ensuring they’re ready when the community needs them most.

A huge thank you to Remi, Cheryl and Liam for making the trip down from Wanneroo to Melville, sharing their knowledge, and giving us a fantastic demonstration of the capabilities of our SES Canine teams. We greatly appreciate your time and look forward to working with you again in the future.

While the world was watching the ⚽️ World Cup, several Melville SES volunteers were busy chasing a different goal. 🧡

This weekend saw our members continue their General Rescue training course, learning and practising the skills that help keep our community safe during emergencies.

Led by some of our experienced Melville SES trainers, the course is a great example of volunteers helping volunteers, sharing knowledge, building capability, and strengthening the team.

No trophies on offer, but plenty of teamwork, determination, and a few well-earned sore muscles by the end of the day. 💪

A few weeks ago, we recognised Greg and John for their service during the NSW Floods emergency response. Unfortunately, Chris couldn't make the presentation at the time, so this week it was finally his turn to receive his NSW Premier’s Flood Emergency Citation.

Chris travelled to join fellow SES volunteers in supporting the communities impacted by the devastating NSW floods, helping with the enormous cleanup and recovery effort. From stripping out flood-damaged homes and businesses to lending a hand wherever it was needed, Chris spent his time helping communities get back on their feet after some incredibly tough circumstances.

The award was presented on behalf of Chris Minns (Premier of New South Wales), Jihad Dib MP (Minister for Emergency Services) and Mike Wassing AFSM (Commissioner, NSW SES).

Congratulations Chris and thank you for representing Melville SES interstate and embodying the spirit of helping others when they need it most. We're proud to have you on the team. 👏🧡

The storm may have passed, but our volunteers haven't stopped.

After contributing more than 230 volunteer hours during last weekend's severe weather, our members were back at it again this weekend—this time in training.

Five of our newest members spent the weekend undertaking their Basic General Rescue course, while our experienced trainers delivered the first of two weekends of General Rescue training for members from Melville SES and other South Metro units.

From storm response to rescue training, our volunteers are always learning, improving, and preparing for the next call for help.
