Gangster rap has always sparked debate, not because of the beats, but because of the messages hidden beneath the music. In the 80s and 90s, major record labels heavily pushed violent, drug-filled, and destructive narratives because controversy sold records. Some believe this wasn’t accidental, but a system designed to normalise crime, division, and self destruction in Black communities through entertainment and subliminal influence.

DJ and Music Producer Sandile “Tista” Mthalane and musician Andile Sikhankana both explain that while hip hop is a powerful form of expression, constantly feeding the youth messages of violence, misogyny, and street life can shape mindsets negatively over time. They believe music should uplift, educate, and inspire, not glorify destruction.

Music influences culture. What we consume daily eventually becomes what we normalize.

Nimbin — sacred country of Nimbunj, the clever and cheeky Wiiaan who shared stories with jarjums and taught lessons of respect, responsibility, and wisdom. 🌈

This powerful song by the young Jarjums of Nimbin Central School reflects the beauty, resilience, and complexity of growing up in the Rainbow Region, learning to walk with awareness, culture, and strength. Like the initiations once held at the Nimbin Rocks, these young voices are stepping into leadership and truth.

At the heart of this project is the shared philosophy of One Vision Productions and MPOWER Pro using music for healing, connection, storytelling, and empowering community through creativity.

Huge love to Bronwyn Renshaw, Stuart Edwards, Jason Chan & Chantay Caudwell, alongside the One Vision crew: Triple Nip, Uncle Gilbert Laurie, Rosie Misschief, Chris Liddell & Andy Jans-Brown.
