up! History

Native vegetation and specifically grassy woodland plant associations have been poorly conserved or highly modified in most areas of the Adelaide Mount Lofty Ranges (AMLR). There is little connectivity between the few patches of grassy woodland remaining. Past attempts to link or restore these areas have primarily focused on over storey trees and shrubs rather than the species rich ground flora of herbaceous plants and grasses. Figures from an AMLR Natural Resources (NR) report in 2014 shows that the region has had 38 flora and 37 fauna extinctions (13 mammals, 13 birds, 6 reptile/amphibians, 4 fish and 1 insect). Another 212 fauna species and 827 flora species are threatened with extinction. One thing they all have in common is that they are dependent on a complete functioning ecosystem comprising of diverse native grassland species that have largely been eradicated. SA Professor Hugh Possingham and Associate Professor David Paton first raised their concerns about species loss in 2000 and 2001. One of the most important steps in achieving restoration of these habitats has previously been ignored in restoration attempts, that is ensuring the ecological design of restoration sites includes the habitat requirements of the targeted species. In the current Natural Resources Management (NRM) plan, it states that 30% (150,000 Ha) of habitat restoration is required to reverse the current trend of species extinctions. According to the Atlas of South Australia (1986), in 1836, only 1.2% of the state’s vegetation was forest. The habitat restoration focus must be on biodiversity and ecosystem reconstruction with an emphasis on the complexity of native grassland vegetation communities, not just tree planting. In 2004 revolutionary research to reconstruct native grassland communities on the broad acre began in Western Victoria by the University of Melbourne and Greening Australia. Seven years later in Mt Pleasant, the Upper Torrens Land Management Project (UTLMP) adapted their approach to suit our very different landscapes and thus initiated a giant leap forward for our region and our State. This project commenced in June 2012, with primary funding from the Australian Government’s Biodiversity Fund. Other funding and vital support have come from the wider community, the UTLMP, Upper River Torrens Landcare Group, Native Grass Resources Group (NGRG), AMLR NR and the Barossa and Adelaide Hills councils. We are now continuing this vital work in the form of a Not For Profit business, Seeding Natives Incorporated. Our esteemed board consists of the following highly skilled and respected individuals in their field of specialty.

The Restoration Decade Alliance has come a long way in just five years.

From our beginnings in 2021, we’ve grown into a network of 26 organisations working together to restore Australia’s ecosystems. We’ve supported members to become official Actors in the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration and created space for shared learning, advocacy and strong restoration voices.

This year also marks an important step forward with the development of the RDA Constitution, helping set us up for long-term impact and good governance.

You can read more about what we’ve achieved in our AGM report.https://restorationdecadealliance.org/working-groups/

🌱 A landmark moment for nature in South Australia 🌱

We’re proud to share some exciting news: the constitution amendments endorsed by Seeding Natives members at our November AGM have now been formally approved by Consumer and Business Services.

This milestone enables Seeding Natives to own, restore and protect land in perpetuity, establishing a private parks system dedicated to long-term ecological restoration and conservation.

It’s a vital step forward for restoration projects in South Australia moving beyond short-term projects to permanent protection of our natural environment, safeguarding native grasslands, biodiversity and ecosystem function for generations to come.

Thank you to our members, supporters and partners who helped make this possible. The groundwork is laid—now the real work begins. 🌾💚

Thank you to Bush Heritage Australia for hosting the Adelaide premiere of the inspiring environmental documentary “Wilding”, and for inviting our own Andrew Fairney to join the panel discussion alongside fellow conservation leaders Tim Jarvis AM from , Mark Smith from , and Tiahni Adamson from .

Wilding tells the remarkable story of Isabella Tree and Charlie Burrell’s decision to let nature reclaim their 3,500-acre, 400-year-old farm in the UK, showing us just how resilient ecosystems can be when given the space to heal. The panel explored how these lessons might translate to our uniquely Australian landscapes, and how we can all support biodiversity, habitat restoration, and rewilding efforts here on home soil.

It was a privilege to be part of this important conversation and to share Seeding Natives’ work in restoring Australia’s critically endangered native grasslands. As Tim, Mark, Tiahni and Andrew all highlighted, there is power in our everyday actions and decisions — we each have a role to play in protecting and restoring nature.

Thank you again to Bush Heritage Australia for bringing this powerful story to audiences and for hosting such an insightful discussion.

Two perfect days at Ratalang Basham's Beach Conservation Reserve, sowing a native grassland over 4.5 hectares this year and another 2.5 ha to come.

Native Grasslands have many benefits, too many to mention in a post, but biodiversity is number 1. Not to mention the joy the public will feel from seeing the increased wildlife attracted to the area and the natural beauty of a thriving native grassland.

Did you know that in this region of the state, we have less than 1% of intact native grasslands remaining. One of the most threatened ecosystems on the planet and with Alexandrina Council and the Friends of Ratalang Basham's Beach Conservation Reserve we are putting one back and doing our part to reverse the catastrophic losses to biodiversity!

Our highest priority is selecting the most appropriate species to sow closest to the dwelling as a firebreak area that will be managed for biomass in the fire danger season. Most of the grasses in the fire break will be green and actively growing in summer.

Photo 1 is the width of the fire break with low growing species sown.

🌱 Help Seed the Future of Native Grasslands 🌱
📅 End of Financial Year Fundraiser | Tax-Deductible Donations

The grasslands you see here are more than just beautiful landscapes—they’re critical ecosystems supporting biodiversity, stabilizing soil, and storing carbon. With your support, Seeding Natives is working to restore these vital native habitats across Australia.

🌿 Why Your Donation Matters

Restore endangered ecosystems
Native grasslands have declined drastically, with many reduced to tiny fragments. Each dollar helps us rebuild these habitats—from seed collection to direct seeding on the ground.

Protect native species and wildlife!
Healthy grasslands support insects, birds, reptiles, and other wildlife. Restoring them means giving native fauna a place to thrive.

Innovative restoration solutions!
We use cutting-edge direct-seeding machinery for efficient, large-scale restoration—scaling our impact far beyond traditional methods.

Tax benefits for you
All donations over $2 are tax-deductible and go directly into on-ground work.
