Body worn cameras are being introduced in WA health facilities πŸ“’ What the WA policy says

Many people support measures that improve safety for staff and patients. At the same time, the use of cameras in healthcare raises important questions about privacy, dignity, consent, trust and accountability.

So, what should consumers know if a body worn camera is activated during their care? What safeguards should be in place?

We've prepared an overview for patients, care-givers, healthcare consumers and consumer representatives, including key questions about how the cameras will be used in healthcare settings.

What information would you want before a camera was activated during your healthcare experience?

Recently, HCCWA Executive Director, Clare Mullen joined Mental Health Commission WA Deputy Commissioner Monica Taylor and a panel of health leaders to discuss person-centred, integrated care and the importance of working with health consumers to drive system reform at the Australasian College of Health Service Management (ACHSM) WA Leadership Conference.

We know that consumer voices bring expertise which cannot be found in reports, data, or policy documents alone. The lived experience of patients, carers, consumers of healthcare can help health services understand what is working, where people face barriers, and where to address change.

Integrated care includes ensuring people feel heard, respected, and supported across every part of their healthcare journey.

We welcome the continued focus on consumer partnership, collaborative approaches, and healthcare reform that places the people who use our healthcare system at the centre of decision making.

When consumers have a voice at the table, healthcare becomes safer, fairer, and more responsive for everyone.

NEW OPTION FOR WA FAMILIES πŸ“’ For many children, fear of needles can be a barrier to getting vaccinated.

A needle-free flu vaccine is now available in WA for eligible children aged 5 to 17 years. Instead of an injection, the vaccine is given as a simple nasal spray.

As flu season continues, this new option may help more families protect their children against influenza.

Our article explains:
πŸ”Έ who is eligible
πŸ”Έ how the nasal spray vaccine works
πŸ”Έ where families may be able to access it
πŸ”Έ what parents and carers should know

FREE RESOURCE πŸ“’ Have you ever had to repeat your health story again and again? Your medications. Your appointments. Your support needs. Your medical history.

For many people, keeping track of important health information across different healthcare services can feel exhausting, especially when you are already managing illness, disability, stress, caring responsibilities, ageing, or language barriers.

That is why Health Consumers’ Council WA has developed a new Health Passport.

The Health Passport is a simple, practical tool that helps consumers and carers:
πŸ”Έ keep important health information together
πŸ”Έ communicate more easily with healthcare providers
πŸ”Έ feel more prepared for appointments and hospital visits
πŸ”Έ support better continuity of care

Sometimes small tools can make a real difference in helping people feel heard, respected, and understood in healthcare.

Download the FREE Health Passport here πŸ‘‰ https://f.mtr.cool/fgalzueajo

This work also connects closely with HCCWA’s Diversity Dialogues initiative, which brings together consumers, carers, communities, and healthcare organisations to discuss how we can improve healthcare access and experiences for everyone in WA.

Our next Diversity Dialogues session will focus on improving access to care for older people from migrant and refugee backgrounds.
